The Real Estate Deal

Editor Cindy Zetts dishes on real-estate and development around Puget Sound: She lived in apartments, townhomes and houses -- a dozen of them in four states -- before settling in the Seattle area in 1997. After taking a bath on the sale of her first home, in South Florida, she vowed to wise up about real estate. She bought a house in Covington 10 years ago because, well, she could afford one there.

Real-estate update: Bellevue house now a rental

On the market. Off the market (briefly). On again. Off again and now a rental. The house at 4749 119th Ave. S.E., Bellevue, is really, truly off the market this time.

The owner has decided to rent out the home for a year, hoping for a more favorable market then, said listing agent Heidi Ward of Coldwell Banker Danforth. The house, designed by renowned architect Paul Hayden Kirk, is architecturally significant, Ward said, but having only two bedrooms and one bath made it a tough sell in this market.

The way the house is situated on the property means it can't be expanded, Ward said, so "it's really appropriate for a couple or one person."

Ward said she showed the house a lot, and prospective buyers were looking at it because of the architecture -- the home is designed around a center courtyard and has one large bedroom and one suitable for an office -- but they were doing exhaustive research and analysis because they didn't want to overpay for the property.

"It's a fantastic house," Ward said. "But this just wasn't the market for it."
