Microsoft opens The Commons for workers
Posted by Sharon Chan
In case you didn't see it on the main Seattle Times Web site, we ran a story on a splashy dining-shopping destination Microsoft The Commons, a signature piece in a massive expansion that is adding the equivalent of a Columbia Tower to what the company calls the world's largest corporate campus.
Some readers have said it's not clear from the story whether contractors have access to The Commons -- yes, they do. You need a key card to access the buildings.
Also, some commenters have been wondering about the bridge that will be built over 520 to connect the southern part of the main campus to the West Campus. Yes, it will be a public roadway for cars, bicycles and pedestrians. Update 3:17 p.m.: Microsoft has committed $17.5 million to this bridge, company spokesman Lou Gellos said, although the final amount won't be known until the construction bids are in.
My favorite comment so far comes from CopperHorse, who suggested that Microsoft build its own condos. "Campus condos would be great! think of all the cars that would be taken off 520."
Or dorms. Microsoft director of worldwide real-estate Chris Owens said in our interview the goal of The Commons was to create a college-campus experience for 25- to 40-year-olds -- the same demographic as Will Ferrell and Luke Wilson in "Old School." ![]()
