A very 'Halo' wedding
Posted by Benjamin J. Romano
Desirai Labrada and John Henry met in December 2004 on Xbox Live. They were playing "Halo 2," the blockbuster second installment of the game series from Kirkland-based Bungie and Microsoft that helped fuel growth of Microsoft's video game business. She was in New York, he was in Florida. They logged on daily to play together, blasting away as love blossomed.
Now, they're planning a "Halo"-themed wedding for a gaming show in January. And their school -- Full Sail University, an entertainment-focused institution near Orlando -- sent out a press release to announce it. (Engagement photo of Labrada and Henry distributed by Full Sail University.)
"A Match Made in Halo," as the Labrada-Henry wedding has been dubbed, will take place Jan. 17, 2009, as part of Otronicon, a games conference put on by Full Sail (do they know about the brewery in Hood River, Ore.?) and the Orlando Science Center. They're expecting 3,000 people, so it's a good thing they've done some marketing/corporate partnering to help defray the cost of their themed nuptials, which will include:
- Master Chief serving as the officiant (of course)
- Attire adorned with "Halo" emblems
- A string quartet to play "Halo" music
- A "Halo"-themed wedding cake and decorations.
This wedding illustrates something about digital culture, says Full Sail Game Studies program director Rob Catto. "The 'A Match Made in Halo' wedding event will bring to life how interactive entertainment and digital media are changing the way we communicate with one another," he said in a statement. "Today's generation is meeting through online platforms and it is only natural for this unique way to connect and date to find its way into multi-player video games."
The theme wedding and publicity have attracted donations from Central Florida business that are providing flowers, catering, videography, custom "Halo" pendants for the bride and pretty much everything else.
Congratulations to the happy couple. Finish the fight!
