FAM: What about the reorg?
Posted by Benjamin J. Romano
I was expecting more discussion at today's Financial Analyst Meeting of the significant reorganization of the company announced late Wednesday afternoon. It could be further evidence that Kevin Johnson's departure for Juniper Networks caught Microsoft by surprise.
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer made little reference to the change, which split the giant Platforms and Services Division into two groups, one focused on Windows/Windows Live and the other on Online Services. Ballmer is taking direct oversight of both groups.
He's due on stage again for a Q&A with analysts later this afternoon, so it may come up.
Here's what he said this morning, introducing the section of his talk focusing on the online business and Internet search in particular:
"Originally, I will tell you, this was teed up differently. I was not gonna give this part of the presentation, but with org changes here, it seemed like today was a good day for me to get in front of you on this topic. In point of fact, we wish Kevin the best in his new assignment at Juniper. He's been a great contributor here, but we thought it made most sense to try to get our organization changes announced before today and so we moved things along a little faster than we might have because we thought it was important that whoever got up here and talked to you about the big investment we're making in online, was actually still going to be here in three weeks. So you're stuck with me on this topic today."
Looking back through my notes, this is the only discussion of Johnson's departure and the reorganization today.
