Yesterday's Agence France-Presse report on a Chinese antitrust investigation into Microsoft and other foreign software companies is being refuted today. AFP itself reported that the China State Intellectual Property Office issued the following statement: "We have never carried out investigations on suspected market monopoly against enterprises, and currently we do not have any plans for this type of work either."
A spokeswoman from the same office told AFP yesterday that there was indeed an investigation, corroborating another report in Shanghai Securities News.
Bloomberg News, also following the story, quotes a director from the Intellectual Property Office and points to its Web site, where a statement calls the Wednesday report "completely untrue." The Associated Press is apparently translating that phrase as "seriously untrue."
