UW backcourt hurt by injuries

Posted by Jayda Evans

Kingma.jpgWashington is heading into its toughest Pac-10 stretch without much proven backcourt help. Freshman sharpshooter Kristi Kingma (pictured right) is out at least three weeks with a high left ankle sprain. She was the team's third-leading scorer (8.5) until senior Michelle Augustavo (8.6) took over the position with a solid showing when Kingma went down in Saturday's win against Washington State.

"It's huge," said Augustavo of the impact of losing Kingma. "We already lost Mo [Sara Mosiman]. But we've dealt with this before."

The Huskies hoped to get help from junior Sara Mosiman, who averages 13.2 minutes off the bench, but she'll be out another "few weeks on the high end," according to coach Tia Jackson, with a right ankle sprain. Mosiman, a 5-foot-9 guard, seemed to be coming into her own during the team's trip to Cancun, Mexico where she was a catalyst in the Caribbean Classic. Then the injury occurred in the final game, a loss to Northern Colorado.

The good news is that second-leading scorer Sami Whitcomb (11.0), a 5-10 wing, was only dehydrated during the WSU game. She needed to drink fluids and ride the bike to keep a cramp in her left hamstring from causing problems. And reserve post MacKenzie Argens (knee) is close to returning. Jackson simply just doesn't want to play her or freshman Liz Lay (knee) unless desperately needed until both are 100 percent healthy. Argens also needs to complete a full practice, which should happen this week.

The injuries, although numerous, are less than what UW experienced last season. It's just going to be tough on new faces to fill-in against No. 11 Stanford and No. 13 California this weekend. But after facing No. 1 Connecticut, what could be worse?

I won't blame the current injuries on the Daugherty's but I will say it's refreshing to have a coach that makes the player's...  Posted on January 5, 2009 at 10:08 PM by HeadHooligan. Jump to comment
I read somewhere that Stanford only suited 10 players against ASU. They're pretty banged up and thin too. Maybe this will help UW a little.  Posted on January 5, 2009 at 6:52 PM by wbb fan. Jump to comment
Merely responding to your comments seadog. My point was that there's a significant difference between the two in this area. On one hand you...  Posted on January 6, 2009 at 8:19 AM by HeadHooligan. Jump to comment
