Storm cuts Beck

Posted by Jayda Evans

The Storm cut rookie G Kimberly Beck today, giving the Storm room under the cap for further additions and making room on the active roster to play trade pick-up Camille Little. The rise of G Tanisha Wright's play also made Beck expendable because coach Brian Agler, who's also director of player personnel, can have either Wright or PG Sue Bird run the offense or play SG.

The team is preparing for the departure of F Lauren Jackson, who'll miss five games in July to prepare for the Olympics with her Australian national team. Agler said he may want to pick up another post to fill the void, signing players to seven-day contracts. That option begins July 1. If Agler kept Beck on the roster, her rookie salary would have become guaranteed, not giving the Storm room under the cap for additions.

Beck averaged 3.5 minutes with Seattle, having her best outing in the team's loss to Los Angeles on Tuesday when she started the fourth quarter and nailed her only three-point attempt. She also had two rebounds and one assist in helping the Storm chop a 14-point deficit to nine at the 5:38 mark.

i know this is beating a dead horse, but t is not a pg. 'nuff said.

beck wasn't given a chance to show what she could do with the 'a' squad in a game situation. playing for a minute here and there is not going to get it done.

jayda, is kristin o'neill still on the practice squad? other teams looking for a solid player, either at the 1, 2, or 3 should give her a try. the fact that agler didn't know she was a pg is pathetic. who the heck researches these players cuz they did a piss-poor job with kristin.

hey, jayda, i thought the storm cut pascaau to make room for little. ?? if that's the case, why drop beck unless there's another pick-up (or trade) about to happen?

WTF... I liked Beck. Now somebody else will pick her up and she's going to make us regret ever cutting her

I agree with scullyfu-

Tanisha is NOT a PG!

First Donovan, now Agler. What is it with coaches that they think she can play PG when it's obvious to even the most casual fan she can't?

Beck wasn't given enough time to show what she can do.

She IS a PG, yet was not given the opportunity to play it, while Tanisha (who isn't a PG) is still being forced into that role.

Whoever researched player personnel did a terrible job with Kristen. She's been a PG her whole career from youth league to college, yet nobody on the Storm staff could find out she's a PG?

I realize Daugherty made her play every position in college, but she was and is a PG first and everything else second.

Not a bad move at all. Although Tanisha is not a point guard, I can't wait to see Camille play!

I heard from many early on in Training camp that Beck is 100% deaf in one ear. That makes it hard to do something as a player, especially a point guard.

Horrible, horrible decision! Sue's going to be running ragged if she isn't already. Tanisha Wright might develop into a consistent player, but at the 2!! . So now we're down to an 11 player roster? Talk about a tight rotation. I hope that the Storm will be signing another player, because once LJ leaves, it'll be down to 10.

On a similar note, Team USA hasn't named a backup PG yet for the Olympics, so who knows what state Bird will be in once the Olympics are over.t

I thought that the active # is 12
Also what was the deal Allie Quigley? I saw her play against UCONN for 4 years and thought that she had all the goods to make it in the Wnba. She could play the 1, 2 or even the 3 if need be.

New coach
New players.
Same old story.
Is this a new trend in WBB? Who needs PG's anyway? Let's just leave it all up to Sue until she's frustrated, exhausted, or eventually injured. Then we can use this as an excuse for another disappointing season.
I have the slimmest hope that Agler has a better backup PG to aquire. That's the only way this would make sense to me. The league is riddled with great players the Storm have cut or declined to resign. Players not good enough or the Storm to keep.
What next, the fans aren't good enough to keep either? Keep it up and that's where it's heading because the fans will eventually grow tired of being disappointed and go to other teams too.
Bitter much? Getting there.

I did like Beck and I don't believe T is a good back up for Sue, however, I don't think Beck was ready for the WNBA. She needs a little more meat on her bones so she is not pushed around so easily.

As for T, I'm fine with her at th 2. She has been doing a good job there, but once she starts running the point...it's just something I don't want to see more of.

Yeah... I cutting Flo was to make room for Camille. this move doesn't make sense to me. T is not an effective PG.

This move makes a LOT of sense-either sign another point guard right away or more likely this will be the move where Agler signs an available post player to replace LJ when she leaves in a few weeks to train with the aussie olympic team.

Quigley is playing for Phoenix right now. They seem to be fine with her contributions so far.

thanks for the Quigley info.lesliefan. Do you know why she did not make the grade for Seattle?I saw her play 8, 10 times
She is smart, clutch and has some skills.

jayda, this is what you posted on the 22nd:

Storm coach Brian Agler, who's also the team's director of personnel, cut Romanian C Florina Pascalau in order to make room under the salary cap to trade his second-round pick in the 2009 draft for Camille Little.

i imagine what you posted today was off a press release. so, when you do speak with agler, how about asking him to clear uo what is an obvious contradiction.

i see that the monarchs cut la'tangela atkinson loose, any chance he'd be looking at her? although, she's not a true big since she's only 6'1". then again. she was a terrific rebounder at unc. thoughts?

Scullyfu -- I updated the post. I wrote it before speaking with Agler and needed some clarification. When I stated "active," I meant that Little would be in the rotation to play. As far as the salary cap goes, Beck was cut to give the team room to sign players to 7-day contracts. Teams can carry 13 players, but the Storm's cap will only allow for 12 and now they have 11. And Diane, yes O'Neill is still running with the practice squad. She could be added, but I think Agler is looking more at a post and would like to see how Little fits. Heard from Betty Lennox that Little is a hard worker that would be a good add for the Storm.

thanks for the explanation, jayda.

as far as the little acquisition, i don't know anyone who thinks she is going to be anything but an asset. and toss in that agler got her for a 2nd round pick. wow! i'm anxious to see her play tomorrow.

My head is going to explode. Tanisha Wright is not a PG! Different year, same tune. At this rate I need to attend as many Seattle games as possible because Sue Bird will be dead before hitting 30, and I might possibly go first, following a heart-attack induced by the sight of Wright playing PG. Bounce, bounce, TO..... "Oh Lord! This man needs help! Does somebody know CPR?" That's exactly how it will go down.

wow... amazing that the post "Storm cuts Beck" would bring this many comments. I think that Tanisha would be playing the point whether Beck was there or not because, afterall, as Jayda said, Beck was averaging 3.5 mpg and that average is only THAT high because of her playing almost the entire 4th qtr in L.A. Wright is the best of what the Storm has for good or bad, and that obviously is the fault of the Director of Player Personnel... you know... that coach fella. But Tanisha has indeed been playing better lately and Beck being cut is no real reason to all of a sudden show Tanisha no love. The situation, afterall, is, pardon the pun Daschel, out of her hands.

Daschel, you crack me up. And Agler did the right thing. We're going to need another big body with LJ gone.

si: i don't see anyone not giving t any love. all anyone is saying is that she's not a pg. do you disagree? if so, i don't think you've been paying attention these last three years.

the reason beck never got any playing time is because agler would always swing t over to the pg position. oh, wait, what's that i hear? oh, its the greek chorus. and what is that they're singing? ah, yes, ' t is not a point guard'.

As I said earlier, mention T at the PG and I'll get 20 posts. People, I think we need to rethink this. T has been playing well and she runs the PG about as long as Beck did. It's only a few possessions. Plus, in the past five games, she's only averaged 1.8 turnovers. Her Connecticut outing inflated the number because she had four in that game alone. This is a needed move because the Storm needs production on the boards. They're only going to get that by picking up another post, especially when LJ leaves.

jayda: just what do you think is going to happen if for some reason sue isn't able to play for a while? agler would move t to pg, for an entire game; that would leave no one on the bench to suck up the minutes she currently plays behind swoopes.

the fact remains that sue is playing waaaaaaay too many minutes, which leads to not only fatigue but injuries. having t fill in for her is not the answer.

the storm have not fulfilled what was seemingly a prime directive for the last four years...get a dedicated back-up for sue!

Exactly, scullyfu. It's been a pretty consistent complaint all season that Sue is playing too many minutes...previously this was followed by a complaint that Beck wasn't getting enough court time, or that T was sliding in to the PG position for the 2 minutes Sue got to rest (or rather, there was just no point guard on court when Sue went to the bench).

Coaches just can't get over how much smoother the offense runs with Sue on the floor, so they play her all the time. That will probably work this year, but she'll have to get her knees done again in a couple of years. This is not preparing for the uncertain future of possible injuries, etc. It's one of the things that makes me miss the days of Tully all the more.

I like T at the point guard. She really improved a lot over the off season in Isreal. I give her credit for working on her game and stepping it up.

I am putting some faith into Agler too.

I am just hopeful for this year so I am going to sit back and let it happen. Also all these changes are happening now because we have had some time off to practice and gauge what this team needs to succeed.

I'm guessing that agler will go after a post player, rather than another point guard at this time. He obviously is happy with Tanisha's success so far along.

I'm thinking of good post players available out there. I like Lindsay Taylor. No more cement feet, good post mechanics, big big body, solid rebounder. She really has come alive the last 2 years playing overseas. I'm really surprised she got cut in mini camp. I think she would be a great replacement for LJ while she is gone in a few weeks. Camille Little can't take on all of LJ's duties. Plus Taylor is a great shot blocker too.

I understand the reason for getting another post for when LJ leaves.

I understand the deal with the guaranteed contracts starting today, so they had to make a move.

But Agler better have a rabbit (that plays PG) up his sleeve. Because he needs a backup PG as much, if not more than, he needs another post.

He already has been playing Shyra at PF, and now has Little. It's true Ashley has been limited by her tendonitis, but she still is good for some minutes.

If Sheryl, Swin, and Yo could play more consistently, along with Katie, that would be enough to get through the 5 games without LJ.

But I don't know how he expects Sue to get through until the Olympic break (a break for everyone except her and LJ) playing over 35 minutes/game.

If Sue breaks down or gets injured before the break or has a terrible Olympics, I'll blame Agler for running her into the ground because he has no backup PG. And I won't be surprised if she breaks down after the Olympics if something isn't done soon to get her some relief.

He has Kristen there. She knows the plays, she knows the players. Can she be any worse than anyone else out there he would sign on a 7 day contract? With her experience with the team, she'd probably be better.

It would take at least a couple days for anyone else to learn even basics of Agler's system. The way Tanisha "runs" the team at PG, it looks like she still hasn't learned it.

Put it this way-if Sue gets hurt, can he really expect Tanisha to play Sue's minutes and win?

Tanisha's not a PG, and never will be.
