The Storm gained another Olympian when Brazil defeated Cuba today 72-67 to nab the final Olympic berth in the FIBA Olympic Qualifier Tournament for Women in Spain. F Kelly Santos contributed 10 points and four rebounds in 30 minutes.
Brazil outscored Cuba 27-20 in the final quarter to pull from behind and breakaway in the close game. The team played without former Storm F Iziane Castro Marques (Atlanta), who was kicked off the team following an argument with her coach. The ban is supposedly permanent, but there is no official word that Castro Marques, a star player for the country, will not compete in the Olympics.
Santos, now a three-time Olympian, will return to Seattle this week and should be back in a Storm uniform by Friday's game against Indiana. She said earlier that she would not leave early to train with her national team for the Beijing Games.
