Storm cuts Washington standout Kristen O'Neill

Posted by Jayda Evans

Storm coach Brian Agler liked Washington standout Kristen O'Neill's work-ethic, but she ultimately didn't fit into his system. He announced her being cut this morning. The roster now stands at 13 players with one more cut expected to keep the Storm under their $772,000 max salary cap. Here's the release:

SEATTLE STORM MAKES ROSTER MOVE

SEATTLE, May 15, 2008 -- The Seattle Storm announced today that guard Kristen O'Neill has been waived from the team. The roster now stands at 13 players.

O'Neill, a 2006 graduate from the University of Washington, averaged 2.5 points and 1.0 rebounds in two pre-season games for the Storm earlier this year.

"It's always great to have a local player in Storm training camp," Storm CEO Karen Bryant said. "I know a lot of fans were rooting for Kristen. We were all very impressed by her and have expressed a desire to keep her involved in the Storm organization this summer."

"Making some of the final cuts is always difficult, but letting Kristen go was an incredibly tough decision," Storm Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel Brian Agler said. "Kristen is very competitive. She is a great defender, shoots the ball well and her work ethic is unmatched. I've encouraged her to continue to work hard and to stay prepared to capitalize if the opportunity arises."

That's unfortunate. I was pulling for her to make the team. :(

I think this was a mistake.

It does sounds like O'Neill will be kept around. Good idea, since Swoopes has already suffered a couple injuries.

I wouldn't be surprised to see O'Neill brought back later in the season.

I agree, y'all, this is a bummer. But I think O'Neill will make a great practice player/community promoter and if something undesired like a Swoopes injury were to happen, O'Neill could be signed quickly. She could also help another team, like San Antonio, which is suffering from injury. Not sure things look good for Kim Beck, either. She and O'Neill bolted out of the training facility with their heads down on Wednesday. In the past, both were more of the upbeat, friendly players always leaving with a smile.

That sound you hear are Husky fans crying their eyes out. Students and graduates of Meadowdale High are doing the same thing.

Lewis is as good as she is going to get. Beck has more upside and will be cheap for the next few years.

Well, I know now that someone is reading this blog (smile). Let me give you a Beck update before things get out of hand. Turns out the rookie was irked because she had to take an exam after a long practice, according to team PR. This doesn't mean she's on the final roster or off it. Just wanted to share the real reason she wasn't her usual upbeat self, telling me to write good things. She's still my pick for the final roster.

What do you mean someone is reading your blog? There proabably 100 of us flipping back and forth between here and K-Pel thinking someone tell us something - any tidbit will do. We're all on the edge of our seat and the dang season hasn't even started yet.

Whoa! DR, I didn't mean to slight you or any of the loyal readers. I guess when I don't get comments I get lonely and think no one cares. And sometimes I forget to check-in with our Web trackers to see how many hits we get. But now I know! Please know you are seriously appreciated and I'll keep on spinning out the tidbits for you. Any special requests? I feel I owe you a special dig. E-mail me privately if you think of something...

I wasn't upset AT ALL. Trying to be a little too funny I guess. Believe me, we're reading.

Btw -- How's Birdy and Cash's timing coming along?

Hey Jayda! It's Blake (formerly from Kentucky and now in DC). Just letting you know I'm still reading regularly! I got to watch Kim Beck play this year at GW and while not flashy, I'm hoping she can stick.

Unrelated, but my good friend's sister, Megan Duffy, appears to have made the Liberty roster. So I've got extra reason to pay as much attention to the WNBA as I do!

Keep up the good work!

I hope Beck makes it. I was very impressed with her in Saturday's game. She sees the whole floor and has a good sense for how to run an offense.

You might throw part blame at ex husky womens coach June Daugherty for this. Kristen is a PURE point guard and she got thrown around at 4 positions at UW. Yes it helped her become a VERSATILE player and her overseas play molded her game. But if anyone who knows basketball in the pac 10, husky fans knew from day 1 of the Daughtery program that the team was in trouble. Horrible everything. Thank goodness Tia is moving things in the right direction as did Chris Gobrecht. Kristen I'm sure will be around in the community all summer long. Thanks for the hard work and complete dedication Kristen!

Yea, I was definitely rooting for Kristen. I hope that she will be re-signed, although I guess that means I'm hoping that someone gets injured - not a career ender - and not one of our top 8 players preferably.

Has anyone heard who got cut today? I would think it was between Kelly Santos or Florina Pascalau of the bigs, or possibly between Kim Beck and Doneeka Lewis of the backup PG's. Since we already have Tanisha Wright, a good combo guard, I don't think that we really need 2 more backup PG's and I like what I've seen of Kim Beck - somehow she makes me think of Nate MacMillan, so I would definitely keep her.

If I was coach, I would be cutting Doneeka Lewis and Kelly Santos (more upside for a 5 with Florina) and re-signing Kristen O'Neill. Now THAT would be a very powerful roster with all bases covered and good versatility/flexibility, don't you think?

So what really happened?

Zendoc, my thoughts exactly with the cuts and bringing back O'Neill.
