Storm guard Sue Bird is going to have surgery Friday on the left knee that has caused her problems with persistent swelling since June 3. Her Connecticut doctor recently returned from vacation and spent the past three weeks discussing and evaluating MRIs sent to him by the Storm, but arthroscopic surgery is the only solution to solve the problem. The same doctor performed Bird's other two surgeries her freshman year in college and in 2003 as a pro.
Bird is expected to miss four games, plus the All-Star Game on July 15.
Because of the possible surgery, the Storm signed point guard Shona Thorburn to an expected seven-day contract, according to several sources. She's in Seattle, but not expected to join the team until after a back-to-back in Houston and San Antonio so that she has time to practice and adjust to the new system.
Thorburn was selected by Minnesota with the seventh overall pick in the 2006 draft, but cut by the Lynx on May 14, 2007.
