Gonzaga Prep soccer players said they approached the District 8 4A championship match against Greater Spokane League champion University with nothing to lose. By winning 2-0 over the previously unbeaten Titans, they had everything to gain.

Top veterans, solid newcomers give NIC hope
One wrestler quit, one left the team to take a job, and one became academically ineligible. Two others moved up a weight class, and three scheduled to redshirt were forced into duty.

North Idaho College's 2004-05 season didn't materialize quite as planned. Instead of tacking up its 14th national championship banner, the Cardinals settled for second place.

From The Oregonian's story regarding the OSAA's reclassification plan that was approved Monday:

"This is a chance for us to have the best of both worlds," PIL athletic director Greg Ross said. "We wanted to keep our league together, maintain as much tradition as we could, and we didn't want to increase our transportation."

Two points:

1) Oregon is so much smarter than Washington in this regard...

A Defensive Legacy
There certainly is no lack of respect for the Evergreen football program. Three consecutive league titles and a state championship practically shout out respect.

But this particular team, the 2005 squad, is searching for a little more -- something these Plainsmen can call their own.

They will get it Friday night if they beat Mountain View to earn the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League title.

If Bellingham wins the 5:30 p.m., the Red Raiders will finish as co-champions of the NWL with Burlington-Edison - assuming the Tigers beat Anacortes - and earn the league's No. 3 seed into the district tournament.
The Tigers and Red Raiders tied both of their regular season games, but Bellingham loses the tiebreaker to Burlington-Edison by virtue of a draw done in the spring.

TOUTLE - The Toutle Lake volleyball team boasted an undefeated league record with the district tournament just a couple of weeks away, but something was still missing.

TL coach Don Merzoian was concerned that his talented and experienced team might be stuck in a cycle of going through the motions.

But Merzoian had no worries Thursday night after a fired-up Ducks squad assembled a balanced and brutal attack to clobber Wahkiakum 25-7, 25-4, 25-14 in a Central B League match.

When Danny Jordan hooked up with Mike Conrad for a 42-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter of Central Valley's 31-7 victory over University, the Titan duo kept the Bears from equaling a Greater Spokane League record.

CV came into the game with three consecutive league shutouts, something that hadn't happened since 1989, when Prep turned the trick for the second consecutive year. Since the league began playing football in 1976, only one team has posted four consecutive shutouts in a single season: Prep's 1986 undefeated state championship team.

That group, which gave up 36 points in league play, opened with consecutive shut outs of University, Central Valley, Mead and Shadle Park.

The Ellensburg Bulldog girls’ soccer team is seeing the light. In recent memory, the Bulldogs were at the bottom of Mid Valley League play.

Now the playoffs are a possibility. But first, Ellensburg must work through the gauntlet of league play. First up in the final three league games was Prosser on Thursday. The Bulldogs however didn’t stay with the Mustangs and fell 4-0.

As well as living up to the tradition it has already established — of attracting top teams and all-state boys and girls basketball players from around the state — the fourth annual Tourneytown.com Shootout will do something else.

It will last longer.

The 2006 Shootout, set for the Yakima Valley SunDome on Monday, Jan. 16, 2006, will feature nine games instead of the usual eight, meaning basketball will begin earlier — at 8:30 a.m., with Class B girls power La Salle playing perennial 1A standout Brewster — and run later. The Shootout's final game — between the Eisenhower and Davis girls, immediately following the boys showdown between those two schools — isn't scheduled to get under way until 9 p.m.

It looked like it was going to be a blowout for the Bainbridge Spartans volleyball team against Metro League Mountain Division rival Bishop Blanchet. The Spartans won the first two games rather easily and had Blanchet along the ropes Monday night, but the Braves fought back to force a game five in heart-thumping fashion.

There is truly a renaissance of individual football performances going on in the Greater Spokane League.
Never in the GSL's recent history have we had two players chasing such storied records at the same time.
From the North Side of Spokane comes Skylar Jessen, Mead's senior running back, who is trying to run down Central Valley's Tyree Clowe as the league's all-time rushing leader. Right now, Jessen has rushed for 3,101 yards in the 20 GSL games he's played since 2003. Clowe sits atop the GSL all-time rushing list with 3,937 yards in the 25 GSL games he played between 1996 and 1998...
