One of my tasks each Monday is voting in the Associated Press' statewide prep football poll.
This is not an easy task.
This year I've seen quite a few football games, but only four involving schools from west of the Cascades.... So how do I decide?
The first part of the equation is teams I have seen. I know Mead is darn good, I've seen them three times this season. I know Ferris and Prep are darn good as well, though are they good enough to be in the top 10? I've also seen Evergreen, Bellarmine Prep, Wenatchee, Issaquah and White River from outside of our area. I check their scores and see how teams they've played are doing...

A Classic Heartbreaker
South Kitsap fans, here's some good news concerning your football team. The offense that will be employed to help this team bounce back from a horrid season has proven, at least in ots first test, to be pretty darn good. The defense, on the other hand ....
WIAA Committed to Classic's Future
A relatively sparse crowd entered the cavernous, 68,000-seat confines of Qwest Field Monday to watch the Emerald City Kickoff Classic, but the state body that organizes the event seems committed to keeping the season-opening celebration of high school football alive for years to come.

Notebook: Kalama looks to fly high
Kalama football coach Mark Buchanan had but one thought after watching senior fullback Chase Campbell walk off the field last November following a last-second 3-0 loss to Napavine in the Class 1A state quarterfinals.
It's sure going to be hard to replace THAT guy.
Athletes of the week
Justin Leonard, Woodland football
The Beavers' senior tailback rushed for 265 yards and five touchdowns in a 40-12 nonleague victory over Kalama. Leonard scored on runs of 30, 41, 75, 18 and 5 yards, all in the first half.

Kickoff Classic not exactly what WIAA had in mind
Be careful what you wish for. Issaquah High's football program wanted a shot at the big time. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association wanted another big payday.
Instead, the Eagles took a shot to the chops, a 55-36 haymaker delivered Monday night by California power Mission Viejo. And the WIAA took a financial bath, with only about 2,500 fans journeying to Qwest Field to watch a mismatch made in the hope of recreating the spectacular Bellevue-De La Salle showdown a year ago.
It's tough to make magic twice in a row. The WIAA tried, inviting high-powered Mission Viejo to play the role of Goliath in its Emerald City Kickoff Classic.

Classic start to season
Two GSL teams collect impressive opening wins
SEATTLE ... the Saxons' 42-14 rout of defending state 4A champion Evergreen (Vancouver) in the Old Spice Emerald City Kickoff Classic was just about perfect.
So was Gonzaga Prep's defense in the next game, as the Bullpups showed they had reloaded well, yielding just 49 total yards and shutting out Bellarmine Prep (Tacoma) 26-0, despite losing 18 starters off last year's 12-2 team.

Saxons plunder Plainsmen
SEATTLE -- That championship celebration is officially over.
So, too, are a couple of long winning streaks for the Evergreen Plainsmen.
The state championship they won in 2004 is theirs forever, but the 2005 Plainsmen found out Monday that if they want to contend for another title, they will need a lot of improvement.
The Ferris Saxons of Spokane, with a defense that reminded Evergreen coach Cale Piland of his team from last year, had no trouble dispatching the Plainsmen 42-14 in the Emerald City Kickoff Class at Seattle's Qwest Field.

Don't fret about early losses
Nine months later, and Evergreen is still the only undefeated football team in the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League.
And that's only because the Plainsmen haven't played yet.
It was a bumpy first week of the season for 4A GSHL football teams.
The league went 0-6 on the opening weekend with Evergreen kicking off its season today against Ferris of Spokane in the Emerald City Classic in Seattle.
But 4A GSHL fans shouldn't lose heart, it's just one week. And no playoff berth was ever won or lost in non-league play.

High School Football Preview: It's Evergreen
The quarterback is a sophomore. The starting tailback did not get any carries a year ago. The linemen do not look familiar.
Still, these are the defending state champions.
The Evergreen Plainsmen won the Class 4A state title a year ago with a dominataing senior class. Of the 22 starting positions, 20 were seniors.
The Evergreen program is a proven winner, but the 2005 players still need to prove they can win.

4A GSHL teams open with high hopes with four postseason bids
Evergreen and Mountain View were clearly the class of the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League last year, and both advanced to the postseason.
It probably was a good thing, too, that the 4A GSHL had two, and only two, berths in 2004. After all, the other five teams in the league tied for third place with 2-4 records.
