ELMA - Elma High School's fall sports parents meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Aug. 9 at the high school commons.
The meeting is open to all Elma fall sports athletes and their parents. Attendance is encouraged.

The Burlington-Edison High School golfer, who competed in the Washington State Men's Amateur Championship earlier this summer, is six shots off the lead after the first day of the Washington State Junior Golf Association State Championshp.

Area trio make U.S. track team
Three athletes with local ties were officially named to the U.S. men's track and field team that will compete at the IAAF World Championships in Helsinki, Finland.
Pole vaulter Brad Walker (University of Washington/University High), discus thrower Ian Waltz (Washington State University/Post Falls) and high hurdler Dominique Arnold (WSU) will compete Aug. 6-14 at the world championships.
All three qualified for worlds during the June 23-26 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Carson, Calif., but the team wasn't official until Wednesday's announcement from Indianapolis.

Kelso's Sitch takes second at national tournament

Mount Vernon High graduate Troy DeVries is headed to Germany to continue his basketball career
Troy DeVries has some basketball left in him.
The former Mount Vernon High player, who had a successful career at the University of New Mexico, will play professionally in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Local report: Plesha wins Valley division title
Daniel Plesha of Sunnyside swept past Bellevue's Filipp Pogostkin to capture the Boys Age 18 Division singles title as the Yakima Valley Junior Tennis Championships ended Wednesday at the Yakima Tennis Club.

Omak grads win fourth straight Hoopfest crown
SPOKANE - Former Omak High School basketball players won their fourth straight title at Spokane Hoopfest June 25-26.
The team, sponsored by Qwest, included Omak grads Steve Monahan, 41, Omak; Michael White, 51, Spokane, and Terry Monahan, 43, Spokane. Also on the team was Ray Stein, 59, Spokane.
Emerald Classic to open fall sports season
RENTON - The third annual Emerald City Kickoff Classic returns Sept. 5 with five high school football games kicking off the fall sports season at Qwest Field.
The schedule for the classic, created and operated by Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, includes:
9:30 a.m. - Wenatchee (4A) vs. White River (3A).
12:00 p.m. - Ferris (4A) vs. Evergreen (Vancouver) (4A).
3:00 p.m. - Gonzaga Prep (4A) vs. Bellarmine Prep (4A).
5:30 p.m. - Mission Viejo (CA) vs. Issaquah (3A).
8:00 p.m. - South Kitsap (4A) vs. Mercer Island (3A).

SK's co-head wrestling coach, Dyess resigns after 16 years
Dave Dyess has had to make some pretty difficult decisions before, but the one he made last month was the most difficult of all.
Dyess has resigned as co-head coach of the South Kitsap High School wrestling team, effective immediately, in order to spend more time at home and with his family.
Wolves take first in Gig Harbor tourney
If this summer is a fair indicator to what will happen this winter, basketball teams across the state had better watch out.
The South Kitsap boys basketball team officially wrapped up its summer season by winning the Gig Harbor Tournament over the weekend. The tourney capped off a busy but highly successful three weeks for the Wolves.
SK'a Bates on "Y" title team
It’s because of gymnastics that Kelli Bates has become all too familiar with things like aches and pains, ice and ibuprofen.
But it’s also because of gymnastics, more specifically her involvement with the Grace Gymnastics Center in Lakewood, that Bates is also all too familiar with national championships.
And the South Kitsap senior-to-be added a third national title to her resume last month as she and her teammates won the YMCA National Gymnastics Championship held June 30 through July 3 in Menomonie, Wisc.

Richland trapshooter fires his way to stardom in Ohio
Jacob Turner is a shooting star. He's fired his way from humble beginnings in Richland to now being on the verge of making the United States Olympic Trapshooting team.
The 16-year-old made a move with his family from Richland to Los Alamos, New Mexico 10 months ago, and one to All-American shooting status at around the same time.

Marvin ready for prime time
Williams becomes highest state draftee ever.
Marvin Williams did it all for Bremerton High School. He took his skills a step farther by helping take the University of North Carolina to the NCAA Championships as a freshman.
Now, Williams will try to help turn around an NBA franchise that won a league-low 13 games last season.

Asics 18s celebrate best-ever finish in Reno
RENO, Nev. ---- It will take a while to sink in, but when the exhaustion and disappointment fades, the Cowlitz Asics 18s Black club volleyball team will look back at Volleyball Festival 2005 with pride, said head coach Bill Marshall.
Asics split its final two matches here Thursday, finishing 11th out of 124 teams in the 18-and-under division after beginning the Festival seeded No. 15.
It was the best Festival showing by Cowlitz since 1988, when the 18s placed ninth out of approximately 90 teams.

Peninsula graduate Tom Sinclair also NCAA champion
Tom Sinclair returned to Peninsula High School this spring dressed in a suit and tie for a Seahawks track and field banquet.
It had been 20 years since he’d thrown a javelin, but after all the talk of his 1975 old-implement high school state record — which still stands at 239 feet, 1 inch — he had to give it a try.

Draft picks seek competition
TUALATIN, Ore. -- The ear-to-ear grin Martell Webster wore as he shook NBA commissioner David Stern's hand during Tuesday's NBA draft has faded, but just slightly.
Webster, the just-graduated high school senior from Seattle Prep, made his first local post-draft appearance Thursday at the Portland Trail Blazers' practice facility, along with fellow first-round pick Jarrett Jack of Georgia Tech.

Short walks tall into WWCC
It's hard to tell which sport is Sadie Short's favorite from her career at Touchet High School.
Short earned all-Blue Mountain Conference honors in volleyball, basketball and softball all four seasons she was with each Indians team, save for volleyball her freshman year when she suffered an injury.
