Meridian's Evan Need-ham shot a second-round low of 74, coming from behind to win the 2A Northwest District boys golf tournament Wednes-day at Avalon Golf Club.
Scholarship contest open
The Bellingham Tennis Club is currently accepting applications for the 2005-06 Mary Jean Richardson Memorial Scholarship.
The scholarship, established in 1990, provides two high school boys and girls free lessons, classes and membership at the Club.

Sehome's boys and Shorecrest's girls lead the team standings after the first day of the 3A Northwest District track and field meet Wednesday at Civic Stadium.

Hanford stands in Bulldogs' way
Ellensburg must beat league foe to advance
For the second time in school history, Ellensburg High School is in the regional softball tournament. The Bulldogs (13-10) play Hanford in a loser-out game on Saturday in Richland at 11 a.m.
If the Bulldogs beat Hanford, they move into double-elimination play, needing two additional wins to advance to the state tournament on June 3-4.

Chris Benz shot a par 72 to win the Quad-District golf tournament May 24 at Whispering Firs in Tacoma. Benz, Paul Guard, Hank Schuman and Pearl Schuman qualified for State, which begins May 30 in Spokane.

College notebook: Army's Luher named athlete of week after Academy golf record
Junior golfer Austin Luher has been named Army's athlete of the week after breaking an Academy record Saturday at the NCAA East Regionals in Nashville.
The Evergreen High graduate shot a three-round composite score of 220, breaking the previous Academy mark (222) set by teammate Scott Manley last season.

Seahawk junior varsity squads both run away with team titles at league meet
Seniors Allison MacKay and David Ng achieved top-two finishes in the Northwest League meet at Burlington to move directly into the district finals. MacKay won the javelin and the triple jump. Ng won the 110 high hurdles and finished second in the 300 low hurdles.

Western Washington's Tim Feenstra, a junior from Lynden, was a first-team All-America pick by the Golf Coaches Association of America/NCAA Division II PING. Two Vikings - Luke Bennett, a junior from Sehome, and Josh Immordino, a senior from Kentwood - made the third team.

Bremerton's Jessica Lindberg went from accomplished gymnast to champion javelin thrower in a few short months.
Jessica Lindberg's entire high school sports career has been a bit of an anomaly. She was the only gymnast at Bremerton High interested in competing at the high school level. With no team to join, she traveled to Poulsbo every day to compete with North Kitsap's team.

POULSBO — Once more, Lee Hodin is the reigning king of the 5-mile Viking Fest Road Race. Hodin, a science teacher at Poulsbo Junior High School and cross country coach of the high school’s team, won the event for the third year in a row — out of the only three times he’s run it — with a 26:46 time.

The East Valley senior threw a two-hitter and struck out 15, pitching the Knights to a 2-1 win over West Valley and the Eastern Regional's second berth into the State 3A tournament.

U-Hi will face Pasco Friday night in 4A regional playoffs
Two arms – and one hit – proved better than one Tuesday at Whitworth College.
The two arms belonged to University pitchers Mandy Mikelson and Linse Vlahovich. The hit belonged to catcher Ashley Fargher.
They were enough to lift the Titans to the District 8 4A softball championship, 1-0, over Greater Spokane League champion Shadle Park.

Max Reinland certainly made Washington State University look good last Monday.
2 Tri-Citians qualify for men's NCAA golf finals
STANFORD, Calif. -- Oregon's Gregg LaVoie shot 1-over 71 to finish tied for 10th, and more importantly, earn one of two individual spots available to the NCAA Men's Golf Championships during the final round of the NCAA West Regional played Saturday at the par-70, 6,742-yard Stanford Golf Course.
The junior from Pasco will be the field on June 1-4 in Caves Valley, Md., along with Richland's Zach Bixler. The freshman helped Washington take third in the team category, reaching the NCAA Championships for the seventh straight year.
Kamiakin's Miller, Richland's Martin win singles titles
WENATCHEE -- Kamiakin sophomore Quin Miller upset defending Big Nine district champion Sam Rechtin of Wenatchee 7-6, 6-1 to win the boys singles title Saturday, while Richland senior Jessica Martin captured the girls singles title with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Kennewick's Natalie Kirch.

Softball team upsets Chelan
Cascade's softball squad pulled off a shocking upset on the road last Thursday, beating a tough Chelan squad 3-2, and capped the week with a pair of wins against Quincy on Saturday, beating the Jacks 14-5 and 6-5.
With the wins Cascade secured at least a fourth-place spot in the CWAC district tournament but could finish as high as second, depending on the outcome of games this week.
The Kodiaks need help in order to capture second place but could grab third place from Ephrata by sweeping the Tigers in a home doubleheader this Saturday in Dryden. Cascade also plays at league-leading Omak on Thursday.

The Bulldogs travel to Prosser of Friday for the district meet with the top seven finishers in each non-relay event qualifying for regionals, May 27-28, in Spokane.

Ellensburg High School baseball coach Jim Klampher was named Mid Valley League Co-Coach of the Year, EHS athletic director Rick Unruh announced on Wednesday. Klampher shared the honor with West Valley coach Klayton Wyckoff. Klampher led the Bulldogs to the playoffs after a 1-9 start.
Ellensburg catcher Brian Rittereiser and infielder Andy Layman were named to the first-team all-league team. First baseman Tony Quirk, outfielder Nick Cawley-Murphree and pitcher Derek Bailes made second-team all-league. The Bulldogs earning honorable mention were infielder Josh Kopczynski and Evan Mowry, designated hitter Noah Loveless, outfielder David Huitron and utility player Scott Cooper.
Space available for CWU summer sports camps
With less than one month remaining in the 2004-05 academic year and its intercollegiate athletics seasons nearly completed, Central Washington University is preparing for a summer of sports camps on the Ellensburg campus, according to a CWU sports information release.
A total of 13 camps in baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, football, soccer and volleyball will all be sponsored and presented by the CWU department of athletics between June 17 and August 11.

They're keeping their fingers crossed at North Thurston.
Despite soggy weather, North Thurston's baseball playoff game against Mark Morris today is still on but has been switched to Ray Morris Park in Longview. Apparently, the rain hasn't hit Longview like it has the Olympia area.
The Class 3A Southwest District game is set to start at 5 p.m. The team was preparing to leave Lacey early this afternoon.

As a senior last year at West Valley, Trevor Rollinger finished second in the 300-meter hurdles Saturday in the Class 3A state track meet.
Twelve months later, in a somewhat longer race — the 400-meter hurdles — and a considerably larger stage, that being the Big Sky Conference championships, Rollinger was second to none.

Rider takes her game to the next level
The girls’ basketball program at Sumner High School experienced a 2004-2005 season in which they turned around a program that occupied the bottom half of the South Puget Sound League standings for the past four years to gain a playoff berth in the West Central District Tournament and come one away from going to State.
The efforts from senior forward Stephanie Rider, did not go unnoticed by college scouts. Rider, the team leader in scoring (16 ppg) and rebounding (13 rpg), accepted a partial scholarship in late April to play division III basketball at Warner Pacific College in Oregon.

First word of a guest instructor probably didn't do much for West Valley's baseball team, with thoughts of someone dryly imploring the Rams to not miss signs and to run out ground balls.

But even after a 10-0 non-league loss to Ephrata on April 5 plummeted Ellensburg's baseball team to 1-9, optimism remained alive.

F.H. shuts down Concrete 3-0
Friday Harbor's Peter Shanks was the winning pitcher for the Wolverines in their 3-0 win over Concrete, at home May 3 at Hartman Field.
With the win, the Wolverines posted their fifth consecutive win and remain undefeated in league play with six games left on the regular season schedule.

The senior pole vaulter on the Cle Elum-Roslyn High School track team has improved his marks in each of the last three meets using a brand new pole.
Warriors fall to River View
CLE ELUM - River View set the tone in the first inning of the first game, scoring seven runs on Cle Elum-Roslyn High School. The Warriors never recovered, losing the South Central Athletic Conference doubleheader 13-2 and 13-10 in Cle Elum.
Cle Elum fell to .500 on the year with a 8-8 overall record and 7-7 in league play.

Sequim fastpitch tops Orting, edges Seattle Christian
Southeastern Missouri coaches must be patting themselves on the back right about now.
Senior Jessica Rosencrants pitched 14 innings of shutout baseball, struck out 30 batters and made Orting and Seattle Christian batters feel grateful for even hitting the ball in two convincing Sequim wins last week.
Rosencrants, who is heading to Southeast on a full ride athletic scholarship next fall, said the games were tougher than most the team has played this year - and that's a good thing according to coach Mel Hendrickson.
