The Bellingham fastpitch team, anchored by strong pitching from Megan Aucutt, defeated Squalicum 3-1 in a Northwest League game on Tuesday at Geri Fields.
Red Raiders rally in 7th to beat Lynden in baseball; Ferndale wins
Bellingham rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday and beat Lynden 3-2 in a Northwest League baseball game at Joe Martin Field.

The ink wasn't yet dry on the letter of intent, and Jacob Gonzales was already at work. The shooting guard from North Kitsap signed on to play basketball for the Peninsula Community College Pirates Tuesday.

Liberty Bell forfeits soccer, baseball seasons
Liberty Bell High School is dropping out of baseball competition for the rest of the season and scaling back its boys' soccer program to a JV schedule only, according to athletic director Mike Wilson.
Player eligibility problems fueled both decisions, he said.

Another heartbreaker for EHS
Selah scores in last 90 seconds
It's been a season of near misses and lopsided results for the Ellensburg Bulldogs soccer team.
The tone was set in their season opener - a 4-3 overtime loss to Ephrata on March 25 - and the heartbreaks continued for Ellensburg High School on Tuesday. The Bulldogs gave up a late goal and lost to Selah 3-2 in Mid Valley League action at Mountain View Park.

Patterson uncorks Purdue javelin toss freshman record
Kara Patterson's preparation for her first season as a college javelin thrower didn't go exactly as planned.
A broken wrist limited the Skyview High graduate's training during her first winter at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. But that setback hasn't stopped Patterson from making a quick impact for the Boilermakers.
She was named the Big Ten Conference athlete of the week on April 12, after she recorded the second-best javelin throw in Purdue history during the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley, Calif. Her throw of 170 feet, 11 inches, is a Purdue freshman class record. It was only her third meet of the season.

If you wanted to irritate any high school track and field coach (or, for that matter, a coach for wrestling, tennis, golf, cross country... ), just refer to their sport as an "individual sport."
They dislike the term, believing it downplays the importance of the team in the success of their program.

Local gymnast vaults to national championship
Kari Kelly didn't even have a high school gymnastics team on which to compete, but now she's a national champion.
Kelly, a 2001 Eisenhower graduate who competed for 10 years for Yakima's Gymnastics Plus club, finished first on the vault Saturday at.
On their best days
But when school records didn't fall at her feet, she had to settle for meet records. And considering the event was the 79th annual Davis Invitational, which drew 24 schools to Zaepfel Stadium, Saturday turned into a fine day indeed for West Valley's jumper extraordinaire.
