Zillah girls basketball playing as one

Posted by Spike at 04:58 PM

The most impressive accomplishment of the Zillah girls basketball team this season isn't its 15-0 record, glittery though it may be. Neither is it that the fourth-ranked Leopards are the single best team in the SCAC West.

It's that they are a single team, period. And playing like one...

BLAINE - With a small bit of encouragement from its coach at halftime, second-ranked Blaine played a dominating second half to knock off No. 5 Mount Baker 53-33 Wednesday night in a North Cascades Conference girls' basketball game.

Baker's wrestling dominace impressive, but Sehome gymanastics set standard
Mount Baker's wrestling team is the elite program in the North Cascades Conference.

It's better than Meridian football, Lynden Christian girls' basketball and even Mount Baker girls' cross country - all multiple-state title winners.

The Mountaineers have never lost an NCC wrestling match and will likely lock up another district tournament title next month.

As impressive as Baker's streak is - it's a huge accomplishment by any standards - it pales to what the Sehome gymnastics team did under coach Nola Ayres.

In Ayres' 25 years with the program, the Mariners won 23 state titles, a national high school record. The team won 13 straight state championships from 1973 to 1985, another national record, and seven in a row from 1987 to 1993...

Those are the reasons why Brittany Prahl plays high school basketball.

It certainly cannot be for the public glory. Although her stats get in the newspaper after the games, her team is not a household name in Clark County.

It's probably appropriate that the Brewster and Burbank girls went into overtime this week in the Tourneytown.com Shootout.

It gave them an extra-long look at each other, and gave more than 2,000 fans — actually, the count was upwards of 3,500 by game's end — a chance to get familiar with two teams who will very likely be back on the SunDome courts for four days come state-tourney time in March...

Halfway through the Northwest League schedule, Bellingham's boys' basketball team is undefeated. More than content to be alone in first place, the Red Raiders know that they can expect more games like the one Sehome gave them Tuesday night.

W. Valley girls see positives in loss to CV

Boys hoops: W. Valley takes main event

Posted by Spike at 04:56 PM

In a game with so much anticipation, so much emotion and so much, well, noise, West Valley's boys did something they didn't expect.

They delivered perfection.

Coach Jim Berndt didn't search for measured words. He just said it flat out.

"That's as well as I've ever seen a high school team execute that offense, period," said the proud mentor of a team that had just handed Brewster its first loss in two years, 55-45, in the marquee game of the Tourneytown.com Shootout...

Rams Cool Under Lights
Although Jim Berndt's players worked extremely hard, assaulting both backboards as if their season depended on it, Berndt handled the Tourneytown.com Shootout's marquee game exactly as his Rams had — cool as a cucumber.

"The difference," Brewster coach Tim Taylor said after West Valley's 55-45 conquest of his Bears, "was their patience on offense. They ran their stuff to a T. Eventually they'd break us down, and then they'd make us pay for it." ...

On Saturday, he qualified for state in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle, posting the state's third-fastest time in the IM and second-fastest in 500 free.

Willapa Valley suffers rare league defeat

Posted by Spike at 03:40 PM

Scott Mattich scored 25 points as Northwest Christian handed Willapa Valley its first Pacific League loss in four years by downing the previously unbeaten Vikings, 72-62, Monday night at Lacey.

Up by one at the half, the fifth-ranked Navigators gradually pulled away after intermission. But Valley coach John Peterson said the tone was set earlier.

"The game was won in the paint. They kicked our tail in the paint," said Peterson. "They came out in a very intense man-to-man. They got us back on our heels and we never recovered. We did not meet their intensity level."

Sam Broeker added 16 points for the Navigators.

It was the first league loss for the second - rated Vikings (7-1, 11-1) since they dropped a 66 - 58 decision at Naselle in January, 2000.
