March 14, 2003

Final: Mead, Central Valley advance

Mead boys 62, Prairie 51.

Central Valley girls 64, Garfield 59.

Posted by Spike at 09:57 PM

Mead leads by 12

With about three minutes to go, Mead leads 37-49 on the boys court.

Garfield girls trail 62-56 with 21 seconds left.

Posted by Spike at 09:50 PM

Garfield at the line

Foul called on Emily Westerberg, who just made both free throws at the other end of the court for the Bears. She has 72 total points so far in the state tournament this year. Garfield made one from the line. Westerberg hits another bucket. Bulldogs trail 60-53 with 1:26 to play.

Posted by Spike at 09:46 PM

Bulldogs hit a three

Garfield cut the lead to 56-51 after trading baskets and are at the line for one shot on a made basket foul. Samantha Tinned makes the free throw, cutting the lead to four with 2:30 to play.

Mead is still doing its thing, with Bryan Williams now in double digits with 11 points.

Posted by Spike at 09:43 PM

Timeout Central Valley

The Bears' lead has shrunk to five points.

Posted by Spike at 09:38 PM

Mead power

Mead boys lead by 20 points at the start of the fourth quarter, 51-31. The Panthers' Adam Morrison has 22 points.

Garfield trails 51-44 halfway through the fourth period. If there's a time to do it, it's now.

Posted by Spike at 09:37 PM

Bears charge, Bulldogs bite

Just when the Bears go on another run and start to tally up the points, Garfield makes plays to get back into the game.

Right now they trail by seven points. Last time down court, the Bulldogs' Malia O'Neal hit a three.

Posted by Spike at 09:34 PM

Hanging in there

This can't be happening but it is. Walker is willing her Garfield team to stay in this game.

At the end of the third period, Central Valley leads 43-40.

Mead leads Prairie boys 45-26.

Posted by Spike at 09:29 PM

CV on its heels

Garfield's Delaney Conway has hit two threes and now has 16 points. Central Valley leads 41-40.

Posted by Spike at 09:27 PM

Foul double trouble

Garfield's Lacale Pringle just picked up her fourth foul and has been crucial inside for the Bulldogs thus far, despite the fact she's a stout 5-9. She's now on the bench with Jazmyne Kendrick in the game.

Garfield trails by five.

Posted by Spike at 09:24 PM

Garfield strikes first

Central Valley's goto, Emily Westerberg, who averages almost 20 points per game, was late coming out of the lockerroom after the half and is moving around gingerly on what looks to be her left ankle. She's only trotting down court between possessions and doesn't look quite as active in the paint.

Garfield has scored and trails by three. But wait! Both teams trade baskets.

CV leads 33-30.

Posted by Spike at 09:16 PM

Mead game nip and tuck

Yeah right!

The Panthers lead 36-20 at the half. No one can stop 6-7 senior Adam Morrison, who already has 15 points. He dribbles down court like a point guard, shoots jumpers and scores, gulp, 29 points per game. And he's got plenty of help.

Look out Franklin!

Posted by Spike at 09:09 PM

Bears charge back

Just like that, Central Valley goes on a run, but Ashley Knight scores to keep the Bulldogs in it at 29-24. And again by Samantha Tinned. CV answers and at the half Central Valley leads 31-26.

Posted by Spike at 09:02 PM

And again!

Garfield cuts its deficit to one point, 22-23.

Fans begin to chant. Central Valley players look shocked.

Posted by Spike at 08:57 PM

Garfield fans still fired up

The Bulldogs' fans are coming alive now that Garfield has scored two unanswered baskets and cut the CV lead to five points.

Posted by Spike at 08:55 PM

Looks like football

CV leads Garfield girls 21-14.

Mead continues its dominating ways, including in the stands. They probably have provided one of the top overall turnouts of any team in the state tournament.

Posted by Spike at 08:52 PM

Garfield trailing

Garfield has missed a handful of field goals and you just can't do that against this solid Central Valley team. Brittany Baynes has scored eight points - three off moves to the basket and easy layins. Emily Westerberg also has eight points. Garfield trails 19-9 at the beginning of the second period.

Mead boys lead Prairie 20-6 early in the second period and have looked all tournament like the ideal opponent for a finals pairing with Franklin.

Posted by Spike at 08:47 PM

David and Goliath

Central Valley looks faster, more athletic and just plain better. Garfield's slow-paced game is part of its strategy. Boom! Delaney Conway drains a three for the Bulldogs.

CV answers twice and leads 8-7.

Posted by Spike at 08:41 PM

Garfield-Central Valley

Here we go. Garfield head coach Joyce Walker has willed her team into the state semifinals. Let's see if she can add another miracle to her resume. Garfield scores first right off the bat and is all over the boards.

Walker stands near the bench with arms crossed, chewing her gum nervously. Bears turn the ball over. Garfield has missed two shots from the field and will need to start converting these.

Score is tied 2-2.

Posted by Spike at 08:38 PM

Finals: Franklin, Prairie advance

"It's all over," chant Quakers fans after Aaron Brooks brings the ball down the side of the court. With three defenders around him, he jumps up and passes the ball across his body to Kellen Williams who registers the jam.

Franklin wins 76-60, advances to the state finals.

Prairie girls beat Redmond 52-40.

Posted by Spike at 08:17 PM

Franklin by six

Kentwood isn't done yet. They trail 69-60.

Redmond now trails Prairie 48-35.

Posted by Spike at 08:12 PM

Brooks factor

Franklin's Aaron Brooks came out tonight playing lights out with twice the hustle fans have seen from him in the tournament before this. The speed of his game tonight shows how much he wants this game and how much he wants to play for the state title tomorrow.

With three and a half minutes left in the game and the Quakers nursing a 69-55 lead, things are looking good.

Prairie girls lead by nine points with 2:30 to play.

Posted by Spike at 08:09 PM

Prairie pulling ahead

Perhaps it wasn't meant to be for the Mustangs. They'll have an uphill battle if they hope to come back from what is now a 42-32 deficit with five minutes left in the game.

Aaron Brooks continues to deliver the goods for Franklin. He just buried a three and the Quakers lead by 11.

Posted by Spike at 08:01 PM

End of third period

On the girls front, Prairie leads Redmond 39-32 early in the third period.

On the boys side, Zenrique Tellez is having a big game for the Qakers with 13 points now. Aaron Brooks has 10.

Rodney Stuckey is up to 20 points now for Kentwood, followed by 6-10 center Jason Mgebroff with 14. The only other starter to score so far in the game for Kentwood is Kevin Griffin with two points.

Franklin leads 59-51.

Posted by Spike at 07:58 PM

And again

Jason Mgebroff scored again for Kentwood. He has 14 points so far this game and they need him at both ends of the court. Conquerers trail by four points.

Redmond trails 28-35 in the waning seconds of the third period.

Posted by Spike at 07:54 PM

Mgebrodd at the line

Jason Mgebroff trimmed Franklin's lead to six points, 51-45. The Conquerers are getting beat on the boards right now and need to tighten things up and stop giving Franklin second-chance shots.

Prairie up by four points on Redmond, 28-24.

Posted by Spike at 07:51 PM

Kentwood fighting back

Aaron Brooks is at the line for Franklin. He missed what may be his first free throw of the tournament and after a Kentwood basket at the other end of the court, Franklin leads 51-43.

Prairie has started the half with a 5-0 run and leads 26-21 on girls court.

Posted by Spike at 07:48 PM

Looking at the numbers

At the half for the boys:
Franklin's Kellen Williams and Kentwood's Rodney Stuckey lead all scorers with 11 points. Stuckey is the leading rebounder so far with six boards. His brother, Ronnie Stuckey, has an impressive five assists.

Aaron Brooks is 3-10 from field goal range with a three pointer.

For the girls:
Redmond's Katie Henderson and Prarie's Andrea Sitton each led with six points. Claire Pallansche had four of Redmond's five first-half rebounds.

After a slow start to the second half, Franklin leads by 12 points.

Posted by Spike at 07:45 PM

At the half

They are starting to set up more plays could run away with this thing if Kentwood doesn't get hot. Franklin leads 43-29 at the half.

Redmond girls are tied with Prairie at 21.

Posted by Spike at 07:32 PM

And the Redmond fans go wild

Now the Redmond girls lead 19-18.

Zenrique Tellez make a pair at the line for Franklin.

Quakers 34, Conquerers 27.

Posted by Spike at 07:26 PM

Update

Kellen Williams hit a pair of consecutive layins off fast breaks and Franklin leads 32-27.

Prairie just took the lead 18-17 with three minutes left in the half.

Posted by Spike at 07:24 PM

Offensive show

John Rogers swatted the ball on a Kentwood layin attempt. The intensity of the game has doubled in the last two minutes, with both teams scoring on every touch. Aaron Brooks just drained a three-pointer after Austin Pierson scored two back to back. Everyone is scoring. Aaron Brooks just took the ball all the way down court and drove to the hoop to nail a reverse layin. Score is tied at 27.

Redmond fans are going crazy. They just took a 15-14 lead.

Note: Kentwood's Rodney Stuckey leads all scorers with nine points.

Posted by Spike at 07:21 PM

End of first period

Kentwood takes 15-13 lead off a pair of free throws by Jason Mgebroff and then lays another in on a fast break to take four-point lead.

Prairie leads the Redmond girls 14-9.

Posted by Spike at 07:15 PM

And the foul

Franklin's Kellen Williams converts a three-point play off the foul. Score tied at 13.

In girls action, Redmond trails Prairie 14-7 with two minutes left in the first.

Posted by Spike at 07:10 PM

Three-pointer for Kentwood

Rodney Stuckey just hit a three-pointer, his seventh point of the game. He's getting open on offense and hitting the boards hard. Kentwood leads by two points.

Posted by Spike at 07:07 PM

Kentwood back in the lead

A bucket by Rodney Stuckey puts the Conquerers back in the lead, 8-7.

Posted by Spike at 07:06 PM

Brooks with the dish

Aaron Brooks just went flying down court with the ball after a rebound and dished a no-looker to Lyndale Burleson who layed it in to give Franklin the lead. Another hoop and now they lead 7-4

Posted by Spike at 07:02 PM

Kentwood looking to conquer

The Conquerers have grabbed an early 4-0 lead, both baskets from center Jason Mgebroff.

Posted by Spike at 07:00 PM

It's seconds before tipofff

Franklin-Kentwood introductions have began. Franklin fans brought newspapers to hold up in front of their faces when Kentwood players are introduced. Fans on both sides of the court are stir crazy, with bands from both schools sounding off.

Players from both teams are looking loose.

"Our house, our house," Kentwood fans chant.

"Franklin's in the house," fans chant back.

Posted by Spike at 06:57 PM

Girls final: Pasco 70, Enumclaw 68 (OT)

Brittney Osborn fouled a Pasco player on a reach in with four seconds to play and the Hornets didn't have enough time to get the ball back down court after the 1-and-1 to have a good look at the basket.

Posted by Spike at 05:34 PM

Final: Snohomish 68, Lincoln 47

In girls action, Pasco and Enumclaw tied at 68 with 21 seconds left in overtime.

Posted by Spike at 05:29 PM

Girls headed to OT

The last several possessions by the Hornets and Bulldogs saw the lead trade back and fourth. Now tied at 64 apiece, they head into OT. For Enumclaw, Brittney Osborn has made some huge shots late in the game.

Snohomish leads Lincoln 60-43 with three minutes to play.

Posted by Spike at 05:23 PM

Enumclaw girls take the lead

With 1:30 left in the game, Enuclaw takes a one-point lead over Pasco. Now with 45 seconds left, Pasco has a 61-60 lead.

Snohomish holds a 15-point edge.

Posted by Spike at 05:14 PM

End of third

Snohomish now holds a 46-31 lead over the Abes. Amos Saffold misses both shots at the line for Lincoln. Now Snohomish is starting to slow down the pace of the game and work the clock as the third period comes to an end.

Pasco leads 57-53 on the girls court with about three minutes remaining.

Posted by Spike at 05:10 PM

Game notes

A Lincoln player argues with a teammate in the midst of play because he doesn't pass him the ball. Teams that do this can't win at this level very often.

Snohomish 46, Lincoln 23.

In girls action, Enumclaw just hit a three-pointer. Pasco now holds a 49-45 lead with a little over five minutes left in the game.

Posted by Spike at 05:04 PM

"They cut it to 19"

Yes, they did, as a boisterous Lincoln supporter remarked after the Abes cut their deficit to 44-23. Lincoln has subbed a few new players into the rotation, hoping to find a new look. They certainly look different, but nothing has changed. The Brockman brothers are running the show tonight.

Posted by Spike at 05:00 PM

At the half: Snohomish 37, Lincoln 16

On the girls court Pasco has pulled away to a 32-25 lead with six minutes left in the third.

"Hey, baby. I want to know oh oh, will you be my girl?" The Snohomish band plays after the Panthers' cheer squad exits the court.

Posted by Spike at 04:47 PM

Panthers up the ante

Snohomish scored a three ball and a pair of gutsy layups from Darrel Martin inside of one minute to push its lead to 30-14 with one minute to play in the half.

The Lincoln press is hurting them more than helping as Snohomish just drained another three-pointer.

Posted by Spike at 04:41 PM

Gridlock

Not much has changed the last couple of minutes, with a few turnovers, fouls and miscellaneous trash talking among players. Snohomish leads 26-11 with just under three minutes to go in the half.

The Pasco girls lead 27-25 at the half.

Posted by Spike at 04:36 PM

Pasco fans going crazy

On the girls court, the Bulldogs' fans are on their feet as Pasco put together a rally to go ahead of Enumclaw by three points with less than a minute to play before the half.

On the boys side, Lincoln has converted a few unanswered baskets and trails Snohomish 20-11 with Jon Brockman at the line to shoot one after making the field goal and being fouled.

Posted by Spike at 04:30 PM

Time out, lights out

Lincoln player Amos Saffold went up for a layin and came down on his head. The sound of his noggin hitting the court could be heard everywhere. He walked off on his own two feet.

Posted by Spike at 04:25 PM

Don't believe the hype

Well, Lincoln seemed to have all the flash and dazzle in warmups and were talking and acting like this was going to be their show. So far they haven't shown much, as they trail 16-7 at the end of the first period. The Brockman brothers have scored nine of the Panthers' points.

Posted by Spike at 04:22 PM

Panthers pulling ahead

Jon Brockman scored another bucket from in close and has forced Abes big man Jason Shepard into several bad shots and passes. Brockman leads all scorers with six points and Snohomish leads 12-4.

Posted by Spike at 04:17 PM

The Brockman show

So far, Jon Brockman has carded four points for Snohomish and his brother Paul scored one at the line. Snohomish leads 5-4 halfway through the first period.

Posted by Spike at 04:14 PM

Lincoln on the board

The Abes score first with a three-pointer by Clarence Demmery.

Posted by Spike at 04:08 PM

Warmups: Snohomish vs. Lincoln

The Panthers and Abes are set for tipoff in a few minutes. Snohomish is coming off a last-second loss to Prairie last night. Lincoln lost 68-60 to a potent Mead team that could provide a thriller in the finals versus Franklin.

Both teams are deserving, but as Clint Eastwood once said, "Deserve's got nothing to do with it."

Loser gets the bus ticket home, winner advances to the medal round. It's that simple but maybe not that easy. This is where you see who wants it more.

Posted by Spike at 04:02 PM

Boys final: Central Valley 66, Pasco 58

In the end, the Bears won it on the boards and advance to the medal round.

Posted by Spike at 03:48 PM

The Lions roar: Kennewick 36, Lake Stevens 27

Kennewick played keep away from Lake Stevens the final three minutes of the game, forcing a few free throws. Katie Holloway and Maisie Todd were able to convert on a few shots for the Vikings but it wasn't enough, as Kennewick advances to the medal round to play the winner of Pasco-Enumclaw for fourth and seventh place tomorrow.

Posted by Spike at 03:36 PM

Timeout Lake Stevens

The Vikings take a full timeout as Amy Hightower scores another four points for the Lions, the last coming off a fast break dish from Leilani Mitchell. Hightower has scored all of Kennewick's points in the second half. They lead 29-17.

Posted by Spike at 03:23 PM

Hightower gets hers

Adding to her five first-half points, Kennewick's Amy Hightower scored a pair of field goals to stretch the Lions' lead to eight points, which could turn out to be a huge lead with six minutes remaining.

Posted by Spike at 03:20 PM

Start of fourth quarter

Kennewick takes a 21-17 lead into the fourth period as its band plays the theme song to "Rocky IV." The Lions have not scored yet in the second half.

In boys action, Pasco trails Central Valley by 13 points with 1:30 left in the third period.

Posted by Spike at 03:16 PM

Vikings on the run

A couple of big plays is all it takes sometimes for confidence and belief to set in. Lake Stevens fans and cheerleaders have become increasingly excited.

Lake Stevens has gone on a seven-point run and trails by only four points.

Posted by Spike at 03:11 PM

Vikings set sail

Gina Carbonatto is trying to take over the game for Lake Stevens. After swishing a three-pointer. The next time down court she was fouled on the shot and made both free throws.

Kennewick hasn't scored in the past three and a half minutes. Vikings have the ball and trail 21-17.

Posted by Spike at 03:08 PM

Looking at the numbers

For the girls, Lyndsay Maciboba leads the Lions with five points. Only three Vikings players have scored so far in the game. Gina Carbonatto and Maisie Todd each have four points. Their big presence, Katie Holloway, is a non-factor so far. She has her knee wrapped and is looking a bit slow.

On the boys side, Ryan Heacock and Derek Taylor from Central Valley lead all scorers with eight points apiece. Kris Groce scored seven points for Pasco in the first half.

Two minutes into the second half, no one has scored in the girls game.

Posted by Spike at 03:05 PM

Boys at the half: CV charges back

The Central Valley Bears put together a late run in the second period and lead Pasco 27-17.

Posted by Spike at 02:54 PM

At the half: Kennewick leading

Both teams are looking for what will lead them into the next round of the tournament. Lake Stevens seems to be looking to find its rhythm and Kennewick is slowly pulling away but has yet to find a player to step up and take over the game.

Kennewick 21, Lake Stevens 10.

Posted by Spike at 02:52 PM

Kennewick spreading the rock

So far, six different Lions players have scored in the game and the Lions haven't had to rely on Leilani Mitchell, who averages over 17 points per game.

Only three Vikings players have scored so far and Lake Stevens trails 17-10 in the final three minutes of the first half.

Posted by Spike at 02:46 PM

Boys and girls, start of the second

In boys action, Pasco leads Central Valley 16-15 early in the second period.

In girls action, Brittni Estes is in the game for the Vikings now. She was a big factor in their game against Garfield yesterday so we'll see how she contributes.

After a trip to the line for the Vikes and a three-pointer by Kennewick's Rachel Jonshon, the Lions call timeout and lead 12-6.

Posted by Spike at 02:40 PM

Kennewick at the line

Rachel Loosveldt is at the line for the Lions with 1:30 left in the first.

Gina Carbonatto drained a three-pointer for the Vikings and now Lake Stevens is loosening up.

Kennewick leads 9-5.

Posted by Spike at 02:35 PM

Kennewick first on the board

Both teams are controlling the ball with equal tempo but the Vikings' shots just aren't going in. Add a couple of faulty passes resulting in turnovers and Kennewick leads 5-0 with three players scoring.

Posted by Spike at 02:30 PM

Coming up: Lake Stevens-Kennewick girls

This is where the state tournament starts to get interesting. After a couple days of play, the little nics and dings start to set in. Players are sore. They are tired. After maybe some setbacks and dashed hopes, both teams will get after it in less than five minutes and the winner advances to play for fourth and seventh places in state.

For the Lions, Leilani Mitchell has turned in a pair of inspiring performances for her team, draining big three-point shots at the end of their games against Monroe and Central Valley. One of her three-pointers forced overtime against the Bears, probably the biggest scare they have seen in the past few years.

For Lake Stevens, Katie Holloway played solid in a loss against Garfield yesterday and needs help from Gina Carbonatto and Maisie Todd, who also score over 10 points per game.

Posted by Spike at 02:21 PM

Boys and girls finals: Walla Walla, L&C advance

Walla Walla's Casey Waddell celebrates the Blue Devils' 59-54 victory over Federal Way by picking up teammate Pierce Johnson and giving him a bear hug as the buzzer sounds at the end of the game.

Lewis and Clark girls beat Puyallup 60-54.

Posted by Spike at 02:09 PM

Girls and boys update

The Walla Walla boys got hot late in the fourth period and turned a neck-and-neck game into a comfortable 55-47 lead over Federal Way with one minute left to play.

In current 4A girls action, Puyallup trails Lewis and Clark 55-46 with just over two minutes left to play.

In earlier girls action, despite a late fourth-period rally by the Jefferson girls, the Kentlake Falcons were able to hang on for a 48-36 win.

Courtney Thompson led Kentlake with 12 points and teammate Kristin Pasley had 10.

For Jefferson, Chelsea Hunt was the high scorer with 11.
