Dragavon to be added, plus Forrest update
Posted by Jose Romero
Apparently, though, it will only be for the opener.
Ben Dragavon is a non-roster goalkeeper for Sounders FC who has been working out with the team. The Monroe native (I covered the 3A state championship game when he was Monroe's keeper) has a contract with MLS as a sort of emergency goalkeeper, and can be signed to a one-game deal in the case of injury hardship.
Seattle is down to only Kasey Keller at GK with Chris Eylander injured but on the mend. But Eylander doesn't appear ready to play tomorrow, necessitating the addition of Dragavon.
The other thing I'm checking on is the status of Kevin Forrest, another non-roster invitee who I'm told must clear waivers from his former team, Colorado, before he can be signed. I believe Sounders FC has the first crack at signing Forrest because it is an expansion team, so look for that deal to get done before the game.
Sounders FC has 22 eligible players under contract at present (23 in all), so adding Dragavon and Forrest will put the team at 24, the league limit.
UPDATE 4:16 p.m.: The team just sent this:
"Seattle Sounders FC called up goalkeeper Ben Dragavon for this week's game due to a case of 'extreme hardship', as stipulated by MLS's Player Rules and Regulations when a club has less than two available goalkeepers. Seattle's Chris Eylander (knee injury) is unavailable due to a knee injury.
Dragavon, 25, is a member of the MLS pool of goalkeepers, and he has been training with Sounders FC since January. He is a native of Monroe, Wash., and played for Western Washington University and was with the USL-1 Sounders from 2006-08."
UPDATE 4:40 p.m.: Forrest won't clear waivers until the end of the day Friday, so he won't be able to play tomorrow. Then there could be a bidding war for him starting early next week.
