Schmid's thoughts on Sounders SuperSearch

Posted by Jose Romero

On Friday I asked Coach Sigi Schmid about being a judge for Sounders SuperSearch, which is later tonight at Starfire in Tukwila.

"For me, what you always look for is you look for somebody that has something that makes them special. Whenever you're looking for players to play at the next level...the way I describe it is if you throw a gathering at your house and you're throwing sort of a potluck dinner, you can't have everybody show up with salad. It makes for a pretty boring dinner. And you can't have everybody show up with a main entree, it makes for a pretty boring dinner. Somebody's got to bring the salad, somebody's got to bring the dinner, somebody's got to bring the dessert, somebody's got to bring the drinks and everybody brings their part. It's the same on a team. You need somebody who's an outstanding header. You need somebody who's got that one-on-one ability. Somebody who's got unbelievable pace. Somebody who just sees it a little bit better and his passing is just a little bit better than the next guy. Somebody who just whips a great cross. Somebody who maybe has a shot that is just better than everybody else's. So that's what you're looking for, and if you can find that in a young player, you can find something special like that, that's a quality that you can then build around."

"The other thing you look for is somebody with potential to grow. Is this a player who looks like he's maxed out or is it a player who looks like he can still advance and still improve?"

Schmid said this will a first for him, as being an evaluator on live TV.

"But it's fun, and I know the people that have watched it have found it entertaining and have found it to be very exciting," he said. "So now it's going to be a great opportunity for one individual because he's going to get an opportunity to play and train with us and hopefully earn himself that spot on our team, on the roster and keep it for the whole season. There's never any guarantees in this world of anything, but to have that opportunity is something that people would die for, in a lot of cases. Just to have that opportunity to be able to try it once."
