Combine wrap, Day 1
Posted by Jose Romero
Want to first make it clear that I am NOT in Florida. This comes courtesy of FC assistant coach Brian Schmetzer, who was gracious enough to give me some of his observations.
Schmetzer said Saturday's games went as expected, some of the players came in a bit rusty from not having played in a little while.
"There were little sparks of good play here and there," said Schmetzer, who is at his seventh MLS combine.
He said UW players Raphael Cox and George John "did OK." Also, Steve Zakuani and the other Generation adidas players played well.
Schmetzer, head coach Sigi Schmid and GK coach Tom Dutra, along with technical director Chris Henderson, took notes from the games and discussed them throughout and afterward over dinner and in the hotel lobby, where Schmetzer said deals get done.
As in coaches, scouts and agents discussing players, trade possibilities and other deals.
Schmetzer couldn't say that one person really stood out Saturday. He said there are exceptional players and others good enough to be considered as draft picks based on need and lesser criteria.
I also spoke to GM Adrian Hanauer while he was on his way to Florida Saturday. I specifically asked him about the rumors of Costa Rican defender Roy Miller joining Sounders FC on loan from his club team, Rosenborg of Norway. Hanauer said Miller is a player Seattle likes but that the team won't comment on.
Finally, there's some reaction and observations from Day 1 on the MLS Web site, including a piece on Zakuani choosing not to look hard at the possibility of being the top pick.
