Sounders SuperSearch, Segment 1
Posted by Jose Romero
It lasted about 12 minutes, including the commercial break. Pretty well done. Nice work by my friend Lisa Gangel from KING-TV. I saw the segment just moments ago on NWCN.
Hard to tell how good the three finalists looked from just a short segment and not being at that tryout in Spokane (I went to the one in Tukwila). The three finalists from the Spokane tryout were Chase Mikkelsen, Dallas Jaussi and Desmond Tachie. They are three of 10 -- I know there were three from Tukwila and four from Yakima.
Mikkelsen is a big guy, Jaussi had the best "Sounders jump" in the fitness drill and Tachie scored a goal in the "A" scrimmage. The next SuperSearch installment is next Thursday.

Two assistants about to be named
Posted by Jose Romero
One for sure -- a fitness coach probably tomorrow, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. I wasn't able to confirm that a second one will be announced soon, but that third and final field assistant (joining GK coach Tom Dutra and top assistant Brian Schmetzer) could be Ezra Hendrickson.
Hendrickson, who turns 37 next week, announced his retirement earlier today from MLS. He has a long history with Sigi Schmid from the L.A. Galaxy days and in Columbus.
Here's a photo of Hendrickson from crewture.com by way of Getty Images.

Checking in with Hanauer and Schmetzer
Posted by Jose Romero
I caught up with the Sounders FC GM before he left for the combine and we talked about the formation of the roster. The club has 15 players now (14 under contract until Jeff Parke signs) and will be hard-pressed to have 20 players signed when training camp opens.
"We'd like to have some flexibility," Hanauer said. "We'll also be be bringing in guys after camp starts."
Hanauer has said he'd like upwards of 30 players in camp. Those ranks will be filled with players on a trial basis, former USL Sounders and others who get invites as camp goes along.
A few players are guaranteed roster spots -- Keller, Jaqua and Ljungberg come to mind -- but those who are not will have to earn their spot on the 20-man senior roster and four-man developmental roster. The draft should add a couple of more bodies, and if Seattle drafts Steve Zakuani or another Generation adidas player, that player will fit under the salary cap as a developmental player and not a senior roster member. That's a good savings if the league minimum for a senior player is roughly $35,000 in 2009. Zakuani has probably signed with MLS for more, but the cap hit to the team is minimal.
If Seattle drafts a college senior in the first round, he is automatically on the senior roster. A college senior picked after the first round could be signed as a developmental player.
Assistant coach Brian Schmetzer remains an advocate for his former charges from the USL Sounders. I asked him about Danny Jackson and he said he and Sigi Schmid want to give the former Sounders a long look.
"Danny's certainly on that list of guys," Schmetzer said. Schmetzer and Schmid are working on that list and it could be more than half of the USL Sounders roster.

That's one guy (Marcus Tracy of Wake Forest) that might have been on Sounders FC's prospect watch list for the SuperDraft that the club won't be getting. This news courtesy of Buzz Carrick at 3rd Degree, the independent FC Dallas news source.

Another coach hiring expected
Posted by Jose Romero
Sigi Schmid's staff will grow to three people perhaps by tomorrow as Sounders FC looks to fill two more spots on the coaching staff.
Schmid is currently assisted by Brian Schmetzer and Tom Dutra, both who will be in Florida this week at the MLS combine. Stay tuned.
