Big day in Oklahoma City
Posted by Percy Allen
AURBURN HILLS, Mich. - Clay Bennett's bid to move the Sonics to Oklahoma City could die today if voters there do not approve a plan to improve the Ford Center. For more details, check out this story.
The Oklahoman columinst Berry Trammel writes: "This is one of those rare wrinkles in time, when man-made and God-made forces have put Oklahoma City in a position unthinkable a mere three years ago." Here's his story.
Also check out the Times' story today on the latest efforts to keep the team in Seattle.
As for the on-the-court issues, Chris Wilcox and Nick Collison returned to drills this morning after sitting out Monday with nagging injuries. Both are expected to play tonight against Detroit. Same starters and no change in the rotations.
Coach P.J. Carlesimo talked about why he benched rookie F Jeff Green in the final two periods of Sunday's overtime win at Minnesota. Basically, he was looking for more energy and effort and Green wasn't giving it at the time.
The coach said opposing teams sometimes attempt to intimidate the young guys (Green, Kevin Durant, Johan Petro and Mickael Gelabale) and he wants them to fight back (not literally) when that happens.
He also said he's taking a hard look at Gelabale who has regressed in the past couple of games. Part of the problem could be physical - Gelabale is thin and a bit undersized for a small forward - and part of it could be mental. Again, it goes back to the intimidation thing. Carlesimo said he believes his young guys play better against teams like Minnesota, but have difficulty against the better squads like Detroit, the LA Lakers, etc.

Jim Senegal is really losing touch. First he sacrifices costco shareholders in lieu of stakeholder who really do not bear commensurate risk and now he thinks keeping sonics is what makes seattle big league. Seattle officially has its idiot.

As of yesterday Polls indicated that the proposed sales tax initiative was far from a sure thing. In fact last I heard they listed it as a projected 55% No vote. Granted it is just a projection but I think it's worth keeping tabs on.

I find it interesting that Bennet needs $97 million from OKC for upgrades yet holds Seattle hostage for a $500 million arena.
Seattle has been hosed and David Stern is holding the hose. I live in Salem so this is an unbiased entry!

I love how you guys put that Clay Bennett's bid to move the Sonics could die today if the people vote no. First of all Clay Bennett is going to move the Sonics no matter what. The only thing that would hold them back is the league wide vote if they decided to turn it down. Oklahoma people will be voting on a one cent sales tax to get the money needed for a stadium upgrade and a practice facility. A ONE CENT SALES TAX! in which they already have a one cent sales tax in place for a kids program so what they will do is extend the one cent sales tax for another 15 months. There is no shot at keeping the Sonics here. I would love it if the Sonics would stay, but let's be realistic, they will be gone. Who would vote down a one cent sales tax? Not only would they get the Sonics, but they would also get to host the Big 12 Basketball Tournament which means more revenue for the city. I love the Sonics but you have to look at this from the Oklahoma perspective.
