Atlanta game thread
Posted by Percy Allen
RECORD SETTER --- Sooner than I could type, Williams scored again to set a new career high.
MARVIN'S BIG NIGHT --- Williams needs a basket to set a career scoring best. He's got 22 points.
THIRD QUARTER --- It took 12 minutes for the Supes to shave two points off their deficit. The Hawks are in cruise control now. They're lauging and joking on the bench, believing the game is already won. They're probably right. Seattle trails 78-59.
SEASON LOW --- The 31 points is a season low for scoring in the first half. The previous mark had been 33 points against Cleveland on Jan. 8.
HALFTIME --- This one is getting out of hand. Wilcox is keeping Seattle close with nine points and Durant has eight, however, the Sonics are unable to contain Atlanta's frontline which is just dominating. Marvin Williams is on his way to a career-best scoring night. He's got 16. His best is 26. Every Hawks starter has at least five points.
GETTING UGLY --- Atlanta leads 44-23. Marvin Williams has 14 points and Josh Smith 8. The Sonics have committed four turnovers and the Hawks' defense is preventing them from getting into their offense.
FIRST QUARTER --- Sonics trail 23-14. Remarkably, their starting frontline is scoreless while Atanta's has 16 points.
NO LOVE FOR MARVIN --- Early in the first quarter, Earl Watson stripped the ball away from Bremerton native Marvin Willams, knocked him to floor and threw the ball off of him as he was falling out of bounds. Late in the quarter, Williams streaked ahead for what looked like a fast break layup, however, Johan Petro raced in from behind and rejected his shot at the rim.
EARLY SIGNS OF TROUBLE --- The Hawks are playing a gambling, aggressive defense that's giving the Sonics fits. They're swittching nearly every pick and getting their hands on a lot of balls. The Sonics trail 15-6.
WILCOX STARTING AGAIN --- Two days after saying he didn't anticipate making any changes to the starting lineup, coach P.J. Carlesimo made a big change and re-inserted Wilcox. Nick Collison returns to the bench despite playing his best basketball of the season. Carlesimo said: "The hardest part was telling Nick because he's done nothing wrong. ... I just feel we need to jumpstart Weezy and get him going."
