Saw this on Brier Dudley's blog for our newspaper. Blazers and Seahawks owner Paul Allen talks a little Sonics arena situation, damping the hope fellow billionaire Steve Ballmer steps in to save the Sonics and Storm.
In watching both of Allen's teams win this weekend (and hearing and reading all the hoopla about both this fall, too), it seems Allen would be the last person to want the Sonics to stay. Think of the millions more he could make if they left? Yeah, those still rooted to Seattle would drink water from Green Lake without a filter before they cheered for the Blazers, but that population will turnover and the transplants will continue to move in, breeding a whole fan base willing to take the train to see local prospects Brandon Roy and Martell Webster shine.
Those who refuse already said they would thrust themselves into pro football. And Allen already has the hold on that fan base, a bunch so vibrant they're recognized nationally.
It seems the Sonics are in the way of Allen's complete dominance of sports in the Northwest. So, I wouldn't expect him to sound too chirpy anyway.
