Durant and Wilcox questionable

Posted by Jayda Evans

Sonics forward Chris Wilcox walked freely into the team's training facility today, happy that MRI results showed no torn ligaments or major damage in his sprained left knee. Wilcox suffered the injury in the third quarter of Saturday's blowout win against Minnesota when teammate Nick Collison inadvertently fell on Wilcox after trying to take a charge.

But Wilcox is questionable to play in the New Year's Eve matchup against Philly on Monday. Coach P.J. Carlesimo said he'll know more at shoot-around, but most likely the decision will be made at game-time. If Wilcox can't play, Collison will start in his place. Collison has averaged 8.8 points and 8.6 boards in his past five games off the bench.

Rookie Kevin Durant, the team's leading scorer (19.7), shot baskets with his sprained left index finger in a splint and his hand in a padded black glove. The shot (he's a righty) was still smooth, with no defender of course.

Durant suffered his injury with nine seconds remaining in the opening quarter of the Timberwolves game. Although the sprain involves multiple "joints," according to coach P.J. Carlesimo, the Sonics were pleased to hear there were no breaks.

Durant said he could have and wanted to play on Saturday, but trainer Mike Shimensky advised against it. Durant will have another X-ray prior to tip-off on Monday and depending on the results and how he feels, Durant could start. If not, Damien Wilkins, who was demoted on Saturday in favor of rookie Jeff Green at SF, is the leading candidate to start at SG.

Don't expect Carlesimo to push Durant or Wilcox, either. The 76ers enter tonight's game in Portland on a three-game win streak, but the Sonics are focused on long-term goals. Carlesimo would like to finish the month of December at .500 (7-7), but given the team's struggle all season with injuries, they're more likely to have both completely heal rather than play through pain. That's what Carlesimo said he told guard Luke Ridnour, who's treating a strained left quad.

Ridnour ran through shooting drills at practice and says he feels a lot better, but he's not slated to play on Monday because Carlesimo wants him at 100 percent.

If PJ is focused on long-term goals, then play Green 35 minutes a game at Small Forward and bring Wilkins off the bench at SG and SF.

i agree. you must find a way to get both durant and green maximum floor time. we're not winning with the vets anyway. might as well go to the new guys. we really need to trade one of our point guards and one of the young centers asap too.
