Leroy Hill: "I'm going to give my full commitment back."

Posted by Danny O'Neil

Leroy Hill appeared at a breakfast event over the weekend in his home state of Georgia, and he was asked about the Seahawks' decision to place the franchise tag on him.

"Obviously, I'd rather get a long-term deal done, but I can't complain. They committed to me with the franchise tag. I accepted and I'm going to give a full commitment back."

Here's a link to the whole story. The quote is improtant because one of the things that can happen when the franchise tag is used that it creates an impasse in a process that usually goes like this:

  • The two sides can't agree on a long-term contract.

  • The team then locks the barn door shut by applying the franchise tag to the player.

  • The player then feels locked in. Not only is the team refusing to offer the player what he wants on a long-term contract, but the franchise tag then keeps the player from entering the unrestricted market.

  • The result is a standoff that's great for Wild West films, not so much in running a football team. That's the reason there have been holdouts -- cough, cough Walter Jones, cough cough. It's the only leverage a player has left.

But reading the story that is not what is happening in Hill's mind, and the fact that he said he's giving his full commitment back is a sign that don't expect to see a holdout. The next thing will be to see if he plans to participate in the offseason minicamps.

Hill was also asked about the coaching change.

"I think it will bring a new spirit. Mike Holmgren was more of an old school-type coach and Jim Mora's a new-school, player's-type coach, so I think it will just bring a new feel to Seattle."
