Q&A with Seahawks new defensive coordinator
Posted by Danny O'Neil
That would be Casey Gus Bradley. It's a nickname hung on him by an older brother when he was 2 years old and he has been known as Gus pretty much ever since.
"It's pretty much 100 percent Gus unless you look at my Social Security card, my driver's license," Bradley said. "I prefer Gus."
He's got a shaved head like new Washington defensive coordinator Nick Holt. Bradley's got a goatee, too, and he's just as enthusiastic as Holt, although he doesn't use the word "awesome" quite as frequently as Holt does.
Bradley is an advocate of an aggressive, attack-oriented defense, though he made clear that "aggressive" is not a synonym for blitz. The Seahawks have brought in Dan Quinn (defensive line) and Tim Lewis (defensive backs), who have a background using 3-4 defensive schemes, but Bradley did say that Seattle's base defense will remain a 4-3 formation.
"Our base philosophy is a 4-3 attacking defense," Bradley said.
Bradley was hired from Tampa Bay, where he served on the coaching staff the previous three seasons.
Bradley said he's still not sure what role he'll play in calling plays on game day, and he's not too concerned about that. Jim Mora's background is as a defensive coach, and it's clear he'll be very involved in the defensive game plan. As for whether Bradley or Mora will be calling the plays, Bradley said he's not worried or wondering about that.
"I just have faith that stuff will be taken care of," Bradley said, "and whatever my role is, I'll handle that."
He came from Tampa Bay before the Bucs made the decision to fire Jon Gruden. Bradley said he had no idea that kind of change was brewing when he accepted the Seahawks job, and he addressed the transition to Raheem Morris as head coach.
"It's unfortunate, I think, what happened to Jon Gruden," Bradley said. "But with the situation that took place, Raheem is a very good choice for them."
Bradley did not offer specific evaluations of the personnel the Seahawks have, though he did say he has talked to linebacker Lofa Tatupu both in the weight room and on the telephone. He was also asked about whether he'd like to see more size on the roster, specifically at cornerback.
"I think that's a big question now, especially now in our division," Bradley said. "Hey, do you need a bigger corner, a bigger safety?"
That's a nod in the direction of Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald, but Bradley then shifted his focus to say it's not all about matching up inch for inch on the outside.
"I do know that if the quarterback is on his back, all of a sudden that receiver isn't as tall," Bradley said. "They can't get the ball out to him. That's what a lot of teams do. There's not a 6-5 corner out there no matter how bad you look at it. He's not going to have everything you're looking for, and I think we have some very good corners. I think that we have some very good players here. We just need to continue to get them in a position to make plays."
