Walter Jones undergoes microfracture surgery
Posted by Danny O'Neil
Left tackle Walter Jones underwent surgery on his left knee Thursday, and it was a microfracture procedure. That is something in which doctors create a number of tiny cracks in the bone to cause bleeding in an attempt to regrow cartilage.
Coach Mike Holmgren said the timeline for Jones' recovery is that he would be ready by training camp. Holmgren said the location of Jones' microfracture surgery is significant.
"It wasn't on a weight-bearing surface," Holmgren said. "So it really is going to be fine."
Other Seahawks who have undergone microfracture surgery are linebacker Will Herring - who returned to play this season - and defensive tackle Marcus Tubbs, who injured his other knee after rehabilitating from the microfracture surgery.
As for Jones, before last Sunday he had not missed a game because of injury since 1997. He is out for the rest of the year.
"I had the privilege of coaching one of the great linemen of all time in Walter Jones," Jones Holmgren said. "He always gave the team and me everything he had." [Editor's note: An earlier version included a reporter's error, misattributing the quote. Danny O'Neil regrets the error and is running laps as punishment.]
