A pressure-packed conversation with safety Deon Grant
Posted by Danny O'Neil
Safety Deon Grant spoke to a group of reporters in the locker room on Wednesday to address his comments that followed last week's loss in Dallas.
"Somebody took that out of context," Grant said. "When I said pressure, pressure means a guy in a quarterback's face. I don't talk about blitzes. 'Blitzes,' never came out of my mouth. It's pressure."
Here's a transcript of what Grant said after Thursday's game, followed by what he said today:
Grant after Seattle's 34-9 loss in Dallas on Nov. 27:
Q: It seems like no matter what you guys threw at [Jason Witten], he was sliding into openings and getting jumps. Is that just him?
Grant: You've got to give him his credit. The guy has been doing his thing, but the time he was sliding in and getting open throws, we [were] in a zone. When we had him man-to-man, though, we had him in lockdown. But when we went zone, he was finding openings and making it happen.
Q: It seemed like they jumped on you so early, and then you kind of dialed up the pressure and came after Tony Romo, it shut him down. Do you kind of think maybe you should have done that sooner.
Grant: I can't talk about that, but you know, that's nothing that needs to be said. You know what time it is.
Q: And it was obvious that once you started doing it, at least you were disrupting what was going.
Grant: Yeah. Hopefully, it was a sign and we capitalize off that.
That was interpreted as a criticism of the defensive game plan, something Grant said was not accurate. He was saying the players needed to generate more pressure whether or not a blitz was called. He was talking about that pressure, not the calls made by the defensive coordinator.
"That’s not what I meant," Grant said after Wednesday's practice. "I never mentioned John Marshall’s name.
"John and I have a great relationship. I have no problem with what he calls. I tell the guys, forget what the call is. We have to make sure we go out here and execute as individual players."
