NFL.com's speculation on Matt Hasselbeck's future
Posted by Danny O'Neil
I've gotten a couple of E-mails about this, and Q13 is discussing a potential news story regarding Matt Hasselbeck's future with the Seahawks or lack thereof.
The report is not anything concrete regarding his future, but rather something that broaches the possibility that Seattle might release Hasselbeck this offseason. Here's a link to the blog post from NFL.com's Adam Schefter.
Hasselbeck's biggest supporter, head coach Mike Holmgren, is leaving the team next season and the dynamics of the team will be different. Plus, next season is the last season of Hasselbeck's contract. It carries a $9.5 million salary-cap number next season.
--Adam Schefter, NFL.com
Two things about that blog post. Yes, Holmgren is someone who is Hasselbeck's biggest supporter, but president Tim Ruskell has said several times this season that there is going to be no overhaul of the offense once Holmgren departs namely because the team still has Hasselbeck. So it's not like Holmgren is Hasselbeck's only advocate in the organization. Far from it.
The salary-cap numbers are right: $3.2 million is in the form of signing-bonus pro-ration, which is the fancy salary-cap terminology to account for money already paid. $6.3 million is in the form of salary for the upcoming year.
Hasselbeck is in the midst of what may end up being his worst season in Seattle, but health has played a factor in that both his and that of the wide receivers.
Hasselbeck was asked about this report on Tuesday, and he:
a) Had not heard anything about it.
b) Was not concerned about that possibility.
He shouldn't be. If he were to be released, he'd certainly end up commanding a contract worth a lot more than the $6.3 million salary he would be paid under his current deal. The man just had the best passing year of his career in 2007.
