Game thread -- Seahawks vs. Washington
Posted by Danny O'Neil
Portis piggyback: Clinton Portis just carried three times for 42 yards, which shifted the balance of field position in the game.
Tribute to a good spike: Goodness knows the Seahawks haven't scored as much as they would have liked this season. But we pause here with 13:24 remaining in the fourth quarter to notice the really phenomenal spike by tight end John Carlson after his 10-yard touchdown catch.
No dance, no pointing or mimed act. Carlson's old school, and he just gave the ball a gigantic spike complete with follow-through. The ball bounced just outside the end zone and it bounced up and into the Qwest Field stands. Man, it was great and Seattle tied the score at 17 with the point-after kick.
Turnover turning point: Matt Hasselbeck was intercepted in the third quarter by Laron Landry on a play in which he overthrew either John Carlson or Koren Robinson. Replays showed a Washington defender fell into Hasselbeck's plant leg as he released. It appeared Hasselbeck took his weight off his leg to avoid being injured and the throw was consequently horribly off mark. That will be something to ask Hasselbeck about after the game.
Washington took the short field and scored a go-ahead touchdown off that play.
Who's wearing No. 21? The roster says that's Kelly Jennings, but the man is making so many plays I'm just not sure. Jennings defended a pass intended for Malcolm Kelly in the end zone, one reason Washington had to settle for a field goal. Scored tied at 10.
Portis is back: Clinton Portis returned in the second half, gaining 5 yards on his first carry.
Darryl Tapp returns: He even provided some pass pressure on Washington's last possession.
Finishing kick: Seattle's first four possessions produced a grand total of 63 yards and Matt Hasselbeck completed all of one pass. Its last possession of the first half netted 72 yards and Hasselbeck completed all five passes he attempted for all of 32 yards and a touchdown to Maurice Morris. Stretching the field? Not really, but it did constitute progress for Seattle.
Clinton Portis, probable to return: He strained a muscle in his hip. He is expected to return. For Seattle, Darryl Tapp has a knee injury. His return is questionable.
Julius Jones sighting: He's not hurt apparently. He replaced Maurice Morris after a couple of runs and then Jones went and broke off a nice run down the sidelines.
With 1:53 left in the first half, Matt Hasselbeck has 22 yards passing. Of course, he had 6 yards when this drive began so things are starting to click. So Seattle's got that going.
False start, No. 37 Clinton Portis was banged up after his 2-yard run near the goal line. He was laying on the sideline after coming off. Portis eventually got up, but grimaced as he walked off. The trainers are working on his right leg, and he appears to be hurting pretty bad.
Ladell Betts replaced Portis. Shaun Alexander is the third-string tailback and at one point he ran out, pulling on his helmet like he was being put into the game. He made a U-turn after about four steps and watched from the sideline as Betts rushed 1 yard for the touchdown.
Santana Moss, rocket scientist rockhead: He was penalized 15 yards for a personal foul after he pushed Josh Wilson's facemask, then took a open-handed whack at Wilson's helmet. Not so smart since it was right in front of an official. Moss did help make up for it, drawing a pass-interference penalty against Kelly Jennings that gave Washington a first down at the Seattle 14.
Awfully familiar: Seattle's still leading, but its first possession of the second quarter is a candidate for worst drive of the year. First-down play: An incompletion in which Matt Hasselbeck's throw wasn't near anyone. Deion Branch was closest consideration and he ran a different direction entirely. Second-and-10, Hasselbeck tried to audible, but didn't have enough time. Tweet. Delay of game. On second-and-15, Maurice Morris ran for 10 yards. Third-and-5, false start against Leonard Weaver, who was lined up at wide receiver, not in the backfield. Third-and-10, Deion Branch dropped a pass, but even if he'd caught it, he would have been tackled short of the first down.
Washington can't kick field goals on Sunday, either: Washington's NFL franchise wasn't any better than the Huskies when it came to making makeable field goals. Shaun Suisham left a 42-yard attempt short with 3 minutes left in the first quarter. It looked like a chip shot in which the golfer needed more club. Like Suisham used a 9-iron when he really needed a 7-iron. It hit off the front of the crossbar. Seattle leads 3-0.
Mo'-mentum: Maurice Morris ran for 44 yards on Seattle's second possession, putting the Seahawks in position to kick a go-ahead field goal. It was the second-longest run for the Seahawks this season. Morris had a 45-yard run against Tampa Bay.
Seeing is believing, part 2: A pass rush? Yes sir, the Seahawks have shown some of that in this first quarter. They had two sacks on Washington's second possession, one by Darryl Tapp -- remember him? -- and then one by Julian Peterson. Again, Washington was forced to punt.
Seeing is believing: Kelly Jennings made a play on third down. No really, it's true. He did. I saw it myself and then re-watched it on instant replay. Washington faced third-and-8, and tried an out route to Santana Moss, defended by Kelly Jennings and he went and made an honest-to-goodness defensive play, knocking the ball down for an incompletion and forcing a punt.
Deion Branch, however, is still short. Matt Hasselbeck's third-down pass on third-and-4 was too high for him.
