Holmgren doesn't expect Deion Branch back this week

Posted by Danny O'Neil

Coach Mike Holmgren said on his radio show Monday morning that he doesn't expect to get Deion Branch back or Bobby Engram back for the team's game against St. Louis.

"I don't think we get any of the guys back until after the bye," Holmgren said on his show on 710 AM.

Branch is coming back from reconstructive knee surgery. He has practiced the past two weeks. Engram suffered a broken bone in his shoulder in the first exhibition game. [Editor's note: Thanks to Brett in B.L., who pointed out I mistakenly called it a rib injury. That was 2005 when Engram broke a rib. Logan Payne also broke a rib this season, but it's important to be anatomically correct, and Engram's injury was to his shoulder, not his rib. My apologies -- Danny O'Neil].

As for the strained calf to Seneca Wallace, the backup quarterback who was going to play wide receiver on Sunday against San Francisco.

"Those injuries tend to linger," Holmgren said.

He also explained how the injury occurred.

"Ran a little route as a wide receiver," Holmgren said. "He heard a pop. That was it, no more scientific than that."

Logan Payne suffered an injury to a knee ligament. Holmgren said the extent of his absence won't be known until later Monday.
