Just for kicks -- Olindo Mare is top kicker
Posted by Danny O'Neil
Brandon Coutu didn't miss a field-goal attempt in August and he made the team's 53-man roster.
It was Olindo Mare, however, who made the most of the training-camp opportunity and he will start out the season as Seattle's kicker.
Bruce DeHaven, Seattle's special teams coach, said the two were very even in terms of place kicking during training camp, but Mare had an edge in the depth of his kickoffs.
"I know it was good for me to have a guy like Brandon in camp," Mare said. "I'm sure experience has something to do with it, and I'm sure kickoffs had a lot to do with it."
Coutu remains on the roster, but the Seahawks will have to clear two spots on the roster next week when Rocky Bernard and Jordan Babineaux are eligible to return from suspension.
As for Coutu's future?
"He'll be fine," Mare said. "He'll do well. He'll play in this league. We'll just have to wait and see."
