The big decisions
Posted by Jose Romero
Let's take a last look at the big ones that face the Seahawks coaching staff tonight and tomorrow morning when the coaches convene to decide whom to cut and who will make up the 53-man roster:
QB
On the team: Matt Hasselbeck, Seneca Wallace, Charlie Frye
The decision: None
WR
On the team: Nate Burleson, Jordan Kent, Bobby Engram, Deion Branch, Courtney Taylor.
The decision: Keep Logan Payne, now that Ben Obomanu is out with a broken clavicle? Or go with seven receivers and keep Michael Bumpus, too?
TE
On the team: Jeb Putzier, Will Heller, John Carlson
The decision: Waive Joe Newton? Likely, but he could come back for another year on the practice squad.
RB
On the team: Maurice Morris, Julius Jones, Owen Schmitt, Leonard Weaver, T.J. Duckett
The decision: Keep Justin Forsett, who fumbled twice in the last two games but still had a big second game and runs with so much purpose? My guess is that he will make the team. Also, what to do with David Kirtman, who didn't do anything in the exhibition season to hurt his chances?
OL
On the team: Walter Jones, Rob Sims, Mike Wahle, Ray Willis, Sean Locklear, Chris Spencer, Floyd Womack, Steve Vallos, Mansfield Wrotto.
The decision: If the Seahawks keep one more, who will it be? Four penalties on Pat Murray might have sealed his fate.
DL
On the team: Patrick Kerney, Brandon Mebane, Rocky Bernard, Lawrence Jackson, Darryl Tapp, Craig Terrill, Howard Green, Red Bryant.
The decision: Jason Babin or Baraka Atkins as the last DE? What about Larry Tripplett?
LB
On the team:Lofa Tatupu, Leroy Hill, Julian Peterson, D.D. Lewis, Lance Laury, David Hawthorne.
The decision: None.
DB
On the team: Marcus Trufant, Kelly Jennings, Deon Grant, Brian Russell, Jordan Babineaux, Josh Wilson.
The decision: Keep Kevin Hobbs at CB, and keep C.J. Wallace at safety? Those seem to be the likely winners.
P
On the team: Ryan Plackemeier
The decision: None
LS
On the team: Jeff Robinson
The decision: None
K
On the team:???
The decision: Toughest decision of all. Brandon Coutu or Olindo Mare? Both had very good preseasons.
The final tally: 3 specialists, 8 DBs, 6 LBs, 9 DLs, 6 WRs, 6 RBs, 9 OLs, 3 TEs, 3 QBs. That's the way I see it breaking down.
