Roster cuts...and a cut fastball from Chris Gray
Posted by Jose Romero
By now you might have heard that the Seahawks have released two players, WR Joel Filani and CB Omare Lowe (the former UW player). They have also placed LB Will Herring on the physically-unable-to-perform list with a non-football injury and placed OT William Robinson and LS Tyler Schmitt on injured reserve.
The Schmitt situation is interesting in that he was drafted in the sixth round this year specifically to be the long snapper this year and maybe years to come after the Seahawks used three players in that role last season. Tim Lindsey was brought in to handle the job after Schmitt suffered a back injury during training camp, and Lindsey has performed ably in games.
Lowe, a veteran, gave up the two-point conversion that won the game for the Chargers last night. He was a longshot to make the team. Now the Seahawks have 75 players and have 22 to release by Aug. 30 to get down to their final 53-man roster. A few of those released could come back as practice squad players.
As for the recently retired Chris Gray, he will throw out the first pitch tomorrow afternoon before the Mariners-Twins game at Safeco Field. Game time is 1:40 p.m.
