The good
The running game
Now, it's just an exhibition game. But it turned out to be an exhibition that the Seahawks running game may indeed be much improved. Maurice Morris gained 62 yards in the first quarter, Julius Jones put a blitzing Minnesota linebacker into a face plant and T.J. Duckett and Owen Schmitt each galloped to first downs on third-and-short. All good signs for Seattle.
The passing game
Matt Hasselbeck completed seven of eight passes and threw for a touchdown, and Seneca Wallace completed 15 of 20 and threw for three scores.
Howard Green
He plays a position thinned by injuries to Larry Tripplett, Red Bryant and Marcus Tubbs, who's still not back from knee surgery. But Green had two sacks in the game, one in which he tackled Gus Frerotte and the other in which he stripped the football from behind. Training camp began with him competing for a roster spot. It would be hard to see him not making the team at this point.
David Hawthorne
The rookie linebacker from Texas Christian forced two fumbles with a pair of thunderous hits. He blew up Albert Young on Minnesota’s first play of the third quarter and then sent the ball popping out of Maurice Hicks' hands later in that period after Hicks was stood up by safety Jamar Adams. The free-agent departures of Kevin Bentley and Niko Koutouvides leaves some openings on the defense.
Michael Bumpus
It would be a stretch to think he’s going to make the 53-man roster, but the receiver from Washington State looked good in practice and he made a pair of catches in the second half of Saturday’s game. That was two more receptions than Ben Obomanu and Courtney Taylor had combined.
Lawrence Jackson
The rookie defensive end chased down John David Booty, forcing a fumble in Seattle territory toward the end of the third quarter. Jackson showed some gumption, twice chasing plays downfield to be part of the tackle.
The bad
Marcus Trufant
Now let’s not get carried. It was an exhibition game and all, but he certainly didn’t look like the cornerback who played his way to his first Pro Bowl last season. He missed a tackle in the first quarter that resulted in a 28-yard gain on third down and was penalized for pass-interference in the second quarter, setting up Minnesota’s second touchdown. He’s not going to get cut, obviously, but he wasn’t very good.
Seattle's secondary
Minnesota completed five of its first six passes in the first quarter against Seattle’s starting secondary on Friday and scored on a 6-yard pass to fullback Thomas Tapeh. Vikings starter Tarvaris Jackson – who was never confused with being an adequate quarterback last season – completed seven of 10 in the first half. He threw for 108 yards and had a quarterback rating of 138.8. He had a quarterback rating higher than 100 in only two games last season
The ugly
T.J. Duckett
He fumbled twice and Seattle lost both. The first was negated by a face-mask penalty against Minnesota, the second overturned after a replay review showed Duckett was down before he lost the ball in the third quarter. That probably won't keep Duckett from getting an earful about ball security, though.
Not-so-special coverage
Kicker Brandon Coutu made a pretty good tackle at midfield, preventing a touchdown, but that’s always a bad sign for a coverage unit. The Seahawks gave up a 53-yard return on their first kickoff of the game. Seattle also allowed a 23-yard punt return in the second quarter.

What I watched, I do believe the Seahawks have a bonafide contending football team, preseason considered......Shaun who?

What, no shout out to Justin Forsett? He had quite a showing, and the second best running performance of the game. What are the chances he makes the team, Danny?

what are you guys whining about? The score is 34-17. We scored twice the amount of points they did. It's a win. Good job Hawks!!

Was it just the TVs that I watched the game on, or are the uniforms more of a shade of green now?

I agree with Danny's list except he left Forsett out of "The Good" section. I really like this rookie - I don't know if there's any room for another back his size since JJ and Mo Mo are similar backs but Forsett runs with a lot of power and could be used at Special Teams. I think Duckett won't make the team, just my thoughts.
Also, I think the three TE's looked good too (Putzier, Heller and Carlson).
I thought Schmitt (FB) looked great too and I think him and Weaver will have a tough battle at FB.
Our secondary looked terrible. 1st string, 2nd string - it was all bad. Especially against a terrible QB and the worst recivers in the NFL, I think that was a bad sign. I'm sure they anticipated more running with AP but I thought they played really poorly against a below average QB.
Anyways, enough of my thoughts - 1st sting O looked good and of course our LB's are just money. Other than that, we still got work to do. Go 'Hawks!

Morris had 62 yds on 6 carries against Minnesota's 1st team defense, while Forsett had 58 yds on 13 carries against the scrubs. I think Morris is safe.
As for fullback, I think Weaver's starting spot is still secure, though Schmitt should be the 2nd fullback. If anyone should be nervous, it's TJ Duckett.
Only the 1st preseason game. Looking forward to seeing how it continues to play out.

The next game (next week on Sat.) lets not play Bobby or Nate at all, I want the other receivers to play the whole game, and while we're at it, sit Mo, Walter, Locklear, Rocky, Brian Russel and Deon Grant, Lofa and J.P.
Take out Tru as soon after he redeeems himself for last night as well.
It is preseason and I want to evaluate the other guys. They need the time.
I want all the other guys to get as much possible time as possible, I want to see if my decisions match the 'Hawks staff's decisions on the cuts or not.

1. Werent those Minnesota Announcers TERRIBLE?? Boring and I feel dumber for having listented to them.
2. Couldnt Schmitt do Ducketts Job as a younger, cheaper player with less baggage?
3. Does anyone else notice Walter Jones aint teh Walter Jones of Old?? He looks slow, especially when Jerrod Allen blew past him.
4. That Forsett kid looks GOOD. I mean he can play!
5. Why did Holmgren kneel with 30+ seconds left in the first half? Let seneca and the 2nd string run the "lightning" and more importantly lets see one of the kickers make a clutch kickbefore the half, maybe??

It is unlikely he makes the 53-man, but they aught to keep Bumpus around. The kid has sticky hands, no fear of taking licks and he's more elusive than you think. Especially considering the shaky situation with Bobby and Branch.

"I thought Schmitt (FB) looked great too and I think him and Weaver will have a tough battle at FB."
He looked great as a receiver but he didn't block very well at all. Still I hope he makes the team over Kirtman.
'Our secondary looked terrible. 1st string, 2nd string - it was all bad. Especially against a terrible QB and the worst recivers in the NFL."
Jackson is terrible but Minnesota is slowly upgrading their receiving core. They drafted Sidney Rice and they picked up Benard Berrian from the Bears.

Ah yes, the secondary did look horrible, but the defensive line against the Vikings #1 unit, did not create an ounce of pressure on Jackson, allowing him to rush throws. Anyone can pick apart a secondary with all the time in the world.
Fortunately for us Kerney was not playing, so hopefully that will improve when he returns.
As for the WR's, it is loaded with young talent, but with Engram, Branch (when he comes back), Burleson, it only leaves three spots for Taylor, Obamanu, Kent, Bumpus, Payne. Plus that limits the ability to keep Forsett around.

I wasn't able to watch the game, being in NYC we don't catch the Seattle or Minneapolis broadcast, but does anyone have anymore observations about the secondary? I can see the box score, but I'd think the Vikings were throwing a lot in the game since they were trying not to tip their hand this early in the season with how they want to deploy AP. 8/11 for Jackson seems like far too high a success rate to give up to a QB of his caliber. Any thoughts?

I hope they keep Bumpus around too. Watching him play he's got a ton of smarts at WR not to mention his sticky hands and effort after the catch, but he was jooking and beating defenders man-to-man like a seasoned point guard. It's been mentioned before that his athleticism has cast doubts on his potential but his performances in practice/scrimmage/and last nights game showed that this kid is not only capable but hungry as hell!

Overall, the team looked good for the first time out all year. If we can run like we did against their 1st string all season, its going to be a good year. I also liked how our goal line d looked. I think our run d will be much improved.
Duckett better get his game right or he is going to have to find another job. In fact, I think we should keep Forsett instead and use a Weaver/Schmitt combo for short yardage. Forsett is a lot better than I thought.
Our secondary did struggle a bit, but our whole team was looking for the run and they were just killing us with the play action. Game planning will take care of that and Trufant won't miss tackles like that too often.
Really, if you look at it, the 2 touchdowns they scored on us came from 3 plays. 1. the kick return to the 50. That made it pretty easy for them to score their 1st. 2 & 3 were Tru's missed tackle and pass interference in the end zone. And then we still almost stopped them. Dude just barely got that ball across the line before he got popped by JP.
One more thing, you got to love the way we hit. We lay the lumber out there.

I thought Walter Jones looked pretty good against the highest-paid defensive player in the league. Also noticed that Allen didn't get any sacks against Jones, too. Is Walter Jones in 2008 the Walter Jones of years past? Probably not, but he's still one of the best OTs in league history.

Danny,
Totally disagree on the play of Trufant and the 1st string secondary.
His PI penalty was ruled a clean play. What about the Dline's inability to rush the passer when the starters were in for both teams?
Jackson never was pressured in the 1st half. Once again, no pass rush on the road.
Granted, Kearney didn't play, but still disappointed to see the 1st string DLine put little pressure on a young QB.

Huh guys lets remember Minny played wihtout mos tof its starting d-line. SO lets not get to carried away. LASy year we were saying the same thing after the 1st preseason game about our o-lien and running game, how did that turn out.

Tru and the entire backfield played terrible. They were soft and unfocused!! The assumed they didn't need to play hard and didn't.
Good thing the young guys played hard otherwise the defense would be a total loss.
and only 1 minnesota Dline guy was missing so the offense looked real good against a good defense.

Sammamish Hawk- Tru's first PI penalty was clean, but his second was very much a pass interference and in the end zone, no less. He had 2 bad plays and will get it fixed.
The line didn't get any pressure, but I don't think we blizted more than once or twice and Kerney does make a big difference. The 2nd string got good pressure. Howard Green and Lo-Jack were beastly out there. I liked what I saw out of the rookie from USC. He ran down a back 30 yards down the field. That was nice.

Of course...Sports Center makes a Seahawks victory into a minnestoa vikings story. Didn't cover any of the the fumbles or show any seahawks touchdowns.
Instead they make a big deal about things irrelevant to the game.
