Position paper: Wide receiver
Posted by Danny O'Neil
The Seahawks didn't sign a free-agent wide receiver in March, they didn't draft a rookie receiver in April and seven of the 11 wide receivers in training camp were on the team last season.
No need for introductions, really. Veteran Bryan Gilmore was signed before training camp started and there's a couple new faces like former Cougar Michael Bumpus, but for the most part, the Seahawks have a group of familiar names at the position:
| Returning players | New players | |
| Bobby Engram (12) | Joel Filani (1) | |
| Nate Burleson (5) | Michael Bumpus (R) | |
| Ben Obomanu (2) | Trent Shelton (1) | |
| Courtney Taylor (1) | Bryan Gilmore (8) | |
| Jordan Kent (1) | ||
| Logan Payne (1) | ||
| Deion Branch (6)* | ||
| *On physically unable to perform list | ||
The competition is going to be tight for a spot on the roster. Because Branch's availability will be a question, the Seahawks might be inclined to have some padding on the roster at that position. In the past six years, they've started the season with as many as seven receivers on the roster and as few as five. Here's how the 53-man roster broke down at that position from 2002-2007.
| 2007 | 2006 | 2005 |
| 6 | 5 | 7 |
| Deion Branch | Darrell Jackson | Darrell Jackson |
| D.J. Hackett | Bobby Engram | Bobby Engram |
| Nate Burleson | Nate Burleson | Joe Jurevicius |
| Bobby Engram | D.J. Hackett | D.J. Hackett |
| Ben Obomanu | Maurice Mann | Jerheme Urban |
| Courtney Taylor | Alex Bannister | |
| Peter Warrick | ||
| 2004 | 2003 | 2002 |
| 6 | 4 | 5 |
| Koren Robinson | Koren Robinson | Koren Robinson |
| Darrell Jackson | Darrell Jackson | Darrell Jackson |
| Bobby Engram | Bobby Engram | Bobby Engram |
| Alex Bannister | Alex Bannister | Alex Bannister |
| D.J. Hackett | James Williams | |

does Jordan Kent have any shot at all to play, or is he just a practice player, then out?

Wasn't Branch on the roster in '06?
