Lofa Tatupu: "This will never happen again."

Posted by Danny O'Neil

Linebacker Lofa Tatupu just released a statement through the Seattle Seahawks on his arrest for driving while intoxicated this weekend.

"I want to apologize to my family, teammates, the Seahawks ownership and organization, and the fans for making a poor decision and putting myself in a bad situation. I take seriously my role as a leader on this team, and in the community, and because of that I'm disappointed and embarrassed by the level of poor judgment I used last weekend. Thankfully, nobody was hurt. This will never happen again, and I hope through hard work on and off the field to begin earning your respect and trust again."

Somebody should copyright that statement...they could make a killing every time an athlete or celebrity utters those sentiments, which seems to be weekly.

Will Ruskell stick to his much bally-hooed principals or cover his own butt?

I hope your right Lofa (that it will never happen again) you are paid to much and a hero to to many people to behave in this way. I know we all make mistakes and one of the better things is being able to grow and move on from these mistakes and be a better person I wish you good luck with that and I will still be cheering for you every Sunday!

What I'd like to know, why the hell hasn't Warren Moon stepped up to the plate and be a man about things and take responsibility for his TWO DUI offenses this past year or so. He's never even fessed up to his mistakes. I like the guy, but when people don't have the balls to take responsibility, I lose alot of rspect for them. And if the Seahawks are that concerned about their public image, why is he still on the radio? I'm not sure who he's employed by - if it would be the Seahawks or KIRO, but either way, if the Seahawks told KIRO that they want someone off the air, I'm sure KIRO would probably (eventually) take care of the situation.

Lofa, we've all made mistakes - some of us have 'gotten caught' and others simply haven't been caught driving 'stupid' like that. I believe you that you won't do it again. I think you're a man of your word. I honestly don't think Lofa is the stupid jackass like Jeremy Stevens is.

We still love ya buddy.......

Everyone makes mistakes.
I love Lofa, and he's fortunate he didn't kill someone or himself.
What the public often fails to see is that athletes are human, and as fallible as anyone else. What sets them apart is the price they pay for being an athlete...all the mistakes they make are laid out for the public to see, as with fortune and fame comes responsibility and accountability. How many of us are fortunate that's not the case?
Make us proud, Lofa!

"Oh man, tell me he didn't" that was my reaction. If it was one of the other guys that would be different but...Tatupu...he is a model of what Seatown is about. I understand we all make mistakes, it is now up to him to show he is not another star athlete taking life for granted.

SeahawkRick has a good point about Warren Moon- he has never manned up about his escapades and he still is on the air. Maybe KIRO ought to fire him- and hire the Groz in his place. There's no question the broadcast would improve.

As far as Lofa goes- he seems contrite and I am willing to let him "earn back (our) trust and respect again."

The Hyundai aspect is totally confusing, though.

This guy I once knew got busted driving drunk, he didn't stop drinking, he build a bar, dance floor, hired a band to play at is home. Guess it keep him off the streets but not he's guest.
I'm not sorry you got busted Lofa, maybe they saved some Innocent hard working father, mother, or child their life!!!! Want to go out and get drink, go to a place that has a bar and rooms to rent....the end!

The carefully constructed picture of the Values (Hawks) Team has been coming unglued. First the Moon, the DT and now Tatupu. The contra-indications to the Kirkland PR line are starting to mount up. There is a reason that the Hawks PR dept. received the NFL award for the best spin meisters. Now they'll find if they can really spin the chickens, coming home to roost, into Hawks.

Lofa used to drive a lowered caddy; maybe he got hurt in the subprime mortgage crisis, too.

Any idea of what is the percentage of adults in the US that imbibe alcoholic beverages? If its only 20%, that means at least 10 Seahawks do. How often do they drive? Probably most of the time.
This should be buried in statistics - it is not news, it is an everyday occurrence. Anybody here not have a family member or close friend who had too much to drink sometime?
Just be glad no one got hurt - that's what the police are for, to 'police' the streets.

With his $42 million deal, he should now think about hiring a driver/butler so that he can avoid this in the future.

Still a big Lofa fan but he should seriously get a driver.

"Star Seahawk jailed, details at 5PM" and "Star Seahawk Lofa Tatupu handcuffed and taken to jail, more at 11" It is really a shame that Tatupu made the decision to drink more that he should and then drive. But I really object to the TV stations making such a big deal of his trouble. I hope he will make smarter decisions in the future. A designated driver sounds like a great idea. What a concept!
As for Warren Moon he did admit to drinking however his breath test was .005 which is only half the measure of drunk driving in Washington. I understand that his second arrest was also under the .008. How many people try to abide by the law and only have one or two drinks then drive?? Should they fall into the same category as a driver who blows a .16 a .20 or higher? And since someone brought it up KIRO is the worst sports channel in the Northwest. When Wayne Cody died they essentially fired their whole sports department and went to "Sports in a Minute" so if you blink you miss it. And they wonder why channel 5 news has taken over in the ratings.

It's disappointing, but probably concerning is a better word - his BAC was .15, 2+ hours after he stopped drinking.... I'm more worried the guy has a significant drinking problem. The community will forgive the guy, as I will - but I think he needs to ask himself some frank questions. He has too much going for him to throw it all away. This guy's no Jeramy Stevens, he'll get it together. He has character.

I have been a big time Seahawks fan since 1976 and also am a big Lofa fan but this is very disappointing. Here is a guy that is a leader on our beloved team who was just rewarded with a hugh contract over the winter but yet he can't pay for a cab or someone to drive him around if he is going to be out drinking.....granted I know we all make mistakes but we all aren't pro football players who are in the spot light ither. You have to be smarter than that. this was just down right dumb.

The nature of our founding fathers, going to jail once just makes you a red blood American boy, but driving around drunk ain't cool, selfish !
I got in a car with a friend that had been drinking alot that day, he damn near got us all killed, he might as well been driving with a sack over his head, if had, I wouldn't have gotten in the car, but I did when he was drunk on his ass?????????

A couple quick thoughts:

1) Great statement by Lofa.

2) Anyone that shames him for this act is self-righteous...my experience is that EVERYONE that drinks is sometimes put in the position that they "have" to drive, they then do indeed drive, nothing happens, they don't get caught, and it's a non-issue and never brought up again. Driving to the slight bit impaired is illegal, so if you've had cold medicine all day, then go get one drink and drive...you very well could be arrested. I'm not condoning this behavior, but this pretty much can happen to anyone.

3) WHY THE HECK DON'T THESE GUYS GET PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS!!!! OR HAVE ONE ON CALL! They are risking so much, and can easily afford someone to chauffer them around, or at least be on call to come get him and his car. I don't get it.

Hey everybody is human, and it took a man like Tatupu to admit he did wrong and I believe later on when football season starts don't rub it in his face He is a better man than some who admit they do nothing wrong. Been a fan since the franchise started in 76 and live in Florida. So Tatupu and the rest of the Seahawks Let's do it this year.

I drive under the influence all the time and have never been busted for DUI the 20 years I've had my license. Even when pulled over one time I passed the DUI test with flying colors. Some can do it, others can't. It's unfortunate to see that Lofa appears to be one of the those incapable of driving drunk.

It couldn't happen to a better guy, and I hope he gets through it.
