this is a horrible pick. what the hell is ruskell thinking? fucking typical!

should have traded down again to get 2 of atlanta's 3 second round picks. This guy would have been available a few picks later!

Good safe pick we can always use productive DE's just ask the Giants

3:23 PM, Apr 26, 2008

Who the heck is this guy. Why didn't we get a TE

Posted by Leroy

3:24 PM, Apr 26, 2008

Should have taken Balmer. He was the best guy on the board in a need position

Why does this pick suck? You can't have enough healthy D-Lineman. He had 10-plus sacks last year and will be a very nice addition...

RUSKEL is a dumb ass
Our D-Line is not that bad we need a STRONG TE

Posted by salemdawg

3:25 PM, Apr 26, 2008

Balmer obviously WASN'T the highest player on their board... Jackson was...

Posted by salemdawg

3:26 PM, Apr 26, 2008

One of the top three TEs will be available when Seattle picks again. No TE had a "first round grade" at this point, so why reach for one.

DEs are always needed - you can't have enough of them.

Who is this guy???

Im sure he is good.... But does he have potential to be a Lofa Tatupu type impact player????

Why did we use this pick on Defense??? Our Defense is already one of the best in the League.

The guys at ESPN were baffled also.

I think you can assume, given his draft record, that Ruskell knows what he's doing. You were all probably screaming when we "reached" and took Tatupu!

I agree this is a horrible pick. they take the 5th or 6th best DE, 4th DE taken in the 1st round. do they think if he's the 4th best DE he's better then the best TE, or WR ??? what the heck pfft

3:28 PM, Apr 26, 2008

Chill out gang. WR's and TE's will be available in 2nd and 3rd rds.

Posted by salemdawg

3:28 PM, Apr 26, 2008

For the record, Seattle's defense was ranked 15 in the NFL - that's middle of the road, not "one of the tops in the league."

Way to go Ruskell, a position we didnt have a need in, so of course thats the area you use your 1st pick for. IDIOT we need a TE or a DT or WR or even a RB not a fucking DE.

Posted by bro88

3:29 PM, Apr 26, 2008

this makes no sense we couldve taken him in 2nd round and sense when did we need a DE?? now keller is gone?? what is ruskell doing?

Posted by Petejuliomcmahon

3:30 PM, Apr 26, 2008

Mel Kiper even said this wasn't the best DE on the board still.

He said the guy from clemson was way better.

I trust Ruskell though. Especially In Holmgrens last year. Its superbowl or bust right now so im sure he will be an immediate impact player in our defensive scheme.

DeSean Jackson - little.

The MSU kid - one good year.

The kid I like is the LSU player - Early Ducet (sp?).

I'm glad Keller is gone - horrible blocker.

Let's hope USC TE is still available. Wanted Purdue TE. Crap.

Posted by eagoldb

3:31 PM, Apr 26, 2008

You're all correct - Ruskell has lost his mind over the off-season and suddenly has no ability to rank talent. Get a grip people.

If we needed one player on the D-line it would have been a massive 320 lb run stuffing guy., because sadly Tubbs isn't going to ever be healhy enough. We had pass rush covered. There are greater needs than DE, this pick is a mystery.

Certainly seems like the team isn't sold on tapp as a 3 down DE and may want to get another young DLman who has more size/strength. Hopefully, we'll trade up in the 2nd round to pick-up Fred Davis.

Posted by salemdawg

3:33 PM, Apr 26, 2008

LOL - Kiper's big board is not the NFL Bible.

Each team has their own. Obviously they liked Jackson over Merling and I trust Ruskell in this situation.

For all you that say DE was not a need - check out what the NY Giants did to win the SB - put pressure on the QB. Keeping guys fresh is key - depth on the DL is always needed - for every team.

Is Jackson better than Merling? Who knows right now - chances are NOBODY here really watched Clemson much. Having watched USC, however, I know how good Jackson has been.

What a bunch of crybaby no nothing morons. You all obviously know more than Ruskell. Not. Get a clue.

I like this pick. Classy character and smart. Ruskell knows what he's doing...wait and see.

3:37 PM, Apr 26, 2008

Uh oh - a safety was just picked that wasn't Mel Kiper's highest rated safety...

That pick must suck too, right?

Posted by JR

3:37 PM, Apr 26, 2008

I agree with the folks that are saying chill dudes. If Kiper was so f-in smart, don't you think he'd be working some somebody? No WR's taken yet. What does that say? Let's wait till day one is over before we jump off the bridge or bandwagon.

thanks SALEMDAWG for setting me straight.

I still feel like our Defense was a lot better than the ranking let on.

Our Defense was 4th in sacks with 45. So the pick doesn't make too much sense... but I'll take more sacks any day!!

Kiper blows. Talking heads don't know sh**t.

The pick makes perfect sense - the Hawks lost to DEs to FA - they need some depth there.

Like I've said - you can't have enough DL...

They should have traded up 2 places for Mendenhall, but I think this guy will fit defensive end rotation nicely! Hope tight end is next!!

Posted by salemdawg

3:43 PM, Apr 26, 2008

I still wish they would have traded for Shockey - not for a second round pick, but maybe for a third rounder...

One thing I like about this pick is that it adds depth - and from a productive player who had a lot of individual and team success in college.

I'm going to guess and say the hawks will get John Carlson, TE from Notre Dame.

Called it! I think this is a solid choice.

Lets all keep in mind they ripped the hawks when they traded up for Lofa a few years back. Given our record over the last 5 years I think they have earned the right to be giiven the benefit of the doubt. When you are picking in the late first round nothin is a guarantee. It is dumb to reach for a player (TE) just because you need it, see Jeremy Stevens.

4:19 PM, Apr 26, 2008

So they got DL depth and a TE who can block and catch.

Seems to me they did OK with their first two picks.

There goes Fred Davis at 48... guess he wouldn't have been there at 55...

Salemdawg..  I can't stand that the NFL ranks defenses solely on yards given up (same as offense).  Seattle did have one of the better defenses in the league.4th in sacks6th(t) in point given up2nd in lowest QB rating4th(t) in int's1st in fewest passing TD's given up6th in lowest completion %10th in ypa (passing)12th in rush yards per attempt12th in rush ypg5th in give/takeSounds like a pretty good def to me.  They do give up yards, but they get take aways and not very many points.  the thing I don't like is that the are just good on the road, and astounding at home

There were three available DE's who projected higher than this low 2nd pick. They managed to pick two choices above there projections by Sports Illustrated and ESPN. Of course, we know the Seahawks know better. Also, arguably the two slowest players at their positions. Two "reaches" so far. Does not bode well for the Hawks. Neither is a true "playmaker". I think Ruskell's one good pick with Tatupu has bought him more draft cred than he deserves.

There were ZERO higher rated DEs available when Seattle picked, according to their draft board, which is a lot more important than Mel Kiper's.

As far as defensive rankings - they were polar opposites in the wins vs. the losses.

They are a good defense - never said they weren't. They lost two DEs to free agency, so this was a good depth pick.

Man, there are some Krazies on this board. Seattle did good today and the last few years Ruskell has produced some good talent for us, unlike the Holmgren picks. There has to be a reason we picked this guy and he was on top of our board. We got a tight end who is supposedly the best in the draft. Good job Ruskell! We can still sign or trade for a veteran DT. That is our biggest need now.

Hello, West Texas A&M: An ACC coach told me a few weeks ago that he's never a seen a player take more plays off in a game. He has no technique, and doesn't work hard enough to make himself better. He is, more than anything, a physical beast. That'll get you nowhere in a league full of physical freaks.

I just read some qoutes from ACC coaches who said that Kentwan Ballmer took more plays off than anyone has no technique and is just getting by on the strengh. That won't cut it in the NFL. He reminds me of Sam Adams when he first came to Seattle. Remember he didn't develop tell much later and was seen as lazy.
