Friday night recap: More Big Josh

In what should become one of the most memorable games of the season, Kentwood's Josh Smith continued a legendary week. He did not hit the game-winning three-pointer last night against Kentridge (Alec Wilson did), but you better believe he's one reason Wilson was free to take the shot in the first place.
Do you want to know why he's the No. 1 junior in the country? Well, it's mostly because of his enormous 6-foot-9 body with incredibly soft touch inside. But it's also because he's capable of the night he had last night: 43 points and 21 rebounds. In 32 minutes.
Put that on top of his game Tuesday, when Smith had 40 of his team's 56 points in a win, and we're seeing Smith emerge into one of the state's most dominant forces. Want to win the Class 4A title? You'll have to get through Josh Smith to win it.
Renton has, undoubtedly, taken control of the Seamount. The Indians capped a season sweep of Mt. Rainier in style, with a 72-58 win that comes just five days after a narrow win against the Rams. This is a team that should start being considered as one of the top contenders at this year's state tournament. The only blemish on Renton's resume? A one-point loss to Bellevue, which could be the No. 1 team in Class 3A when the rankings come out tomorrow (you'll have to wait.)
It was an interesting night in the Metro League, beginning with Bishop Blanchet's win against Seattle Prep. It didn't do much to narrow Prep's lead in the Metro Mountain division -- the Panthers still have a three-game lead -- but it did keep Blanchet above .500 and in a better position for the Metro tournament.
Meanwhile, Franklin rebounded nicely with an 81-44 win against Chief Sealth (27 for Peyton Siva), and Rainier Beach survived a tough Central Kitsap team 61-56. Franklin already has the Metro Valley sewn up, but Rainier Beach is in a first-place tie in the Metro Sound with Bainbridge. The two teams play Friday on the island, where the Spartans have won five straight.
