Thursday Morning Stars

Posted by Tom Wyrwich

It was a statement night on Wednesday for Auburn Riverside, which showed it's ready to compete in Class 4A right now. Last year's 3A champs beat Snohomish 50-49, with Mercedes Wetmore leading the way with 17 points. Here are your other standouts from Wednesday night:

1. Eric Taylor, Ballard, boys basketball. It's never easy to win on Mercer Island, and it's near impossible to win 56-29. But Taylor, with 29 points of his own, helped lead Ballard to the blowout.

2. Jasmine McCleave, Holy Names, girls basketball. No. 9 Holy Names got itself a big-time Metro League win against Seattle Prep last night, and McCleave scored 21 points. The difference in the Cougars' 50-46 win? The third quarter, when Holy Names outscored Prep 16-9 to take back the lead.

3. John Gage, Vashon Island, boys basketball. Get used to this name. He was the Nisqually League player of the year as a sophomore last year, and he's one of the area's better big men. Last night, he scored 27 points in a 70-54 win against Seattle Academy.
