McBride goes down, Mountainview goes out

Posted by Sandy Ringer

If you just look at the results, you'll see that Auburn Mountainview went two-and-out at the Class 3A state volleyball tournament.

What you won't see is that the Lions played without their four-year MVP, Megan McBride, in the loser-out match with Mount Si this afternoon.

McBride, a dynamic setter/hitter who has signed with Oregon State, experienced blurred vision and nausea after taking a hard-hit ball to the left clavical area during the third game of Mountainview's opening match against Shorecrest. She went on to finish the match, which Shorecrest won 3-1, but trainers recommended she sit out the next match against Mount Si and McBride's parents ultimately took her to a nearby medical center to be checked out.

Mountainview clearly was not the same team without her, but battled Mount Si before losing, 3-1.

So Mount Si is still in the trophy chase along with Sumner, Camas and Kennedy.

Top-ranked Sumner rebounded from its first-round loss to Bishop Blanchet to eliminate Holy Names, 3-0. That ended a seven-match losing streatk at state. The Spartans play Camas tonight at 8 p.m. in another elimination game with the winner assured of a trophy. Camas knocked out Union.

Kennedy was teetering on elimination after falling behind Enumclaw 2-0, but the Lancers rallied to win the final three games and now play Mount Si tonight at 8 with a trophy on the line.

There's another break now until the quarterfinals at 6:30. I'll be back with some quick updates, but I'll be writing on deadline for Friday's edition, too, so won't be able to give you too much. The quarterfinal losers play again tonight at 8 and those losers go home. Semifinals are Friday at 3:30 p.m. with the championship at 6:30 p.m.
