3A Volleyball update -- Blanchet pulls upset
Posted by Sandy Ringer
The state tournament tends to bring out the best in the Bishop Blanchet volleyball team, and this morning was a classic example as the eighth-ranked Braves knocked off No. 1 Sumner, 3-0. It's the second straight loss for the Spartans, who were unbeaten before dropping the championship match of the West Central/Southwest bi-district tournament to Auburn Mountainview last Saturday.
Other first-round winners were Meadowdale over Holy Names, Shadle Park over Union and Mercer Island over Camas. Blanchet plays Meadowdale in the quarterfinals, while MI takes on Shadle Park, both at 6:30 p.m.
Sumner, which has gone 0-2 in the past two state tournaments, looks to regroup in a loser-out match against Holy Names at 2 p.m. Union and Camas also play at 2 p.m, loser out.
The other four first-round matches are just getting under way. No. 5 Kennedy has the early jump on No. 7 Eastside Catholic in what should be a barnburner. I'm also eager to see No. 4 Auburn Mountainview against No. 2 Shorecrest. They're not quite ready to go yet. That court is a little behind the other three.
Mount Si leads Lakes 12-6 in game one, while Mount Spokane and Enumclaw are 2-2 early.
