The story behind 83-0

So Lakes, you might have heard, beat Sumner 83-0 last week. Lakes had come off a very close win against Enumclaw, and Sumner had just beaten last year's SPSL Champ, Franklin Pierce, so the prevailing thought was that this would be close -- or even that Sumner had a shot at the upset.
It didn't go that way, of course. Sumner had nine fumbles and two interceptions. The Lancers scored on a punt return, a fumble return and an interception return -- in the first quarter alone. So let's be clear: this was a crazy game. What was happening to Sumner goes beyond Murphy's Law. Lakes recovered a fumble at the Spartans' 11 to open the second half, and Lakes' starting QB threw a TD to its top receiver. Then, with 10 minutes left in the third quarter, Lakes pulled all of its starters. It scored twice more, and there was no running clock.
Now we're in an age of opinions, and that score -- 83-0 -- surely brought some out this week. Some pretty harsh words going around, actually. So I'd invite everyone to read today's story in the The News Tribune. It's by the writer, Doug Pacey, who covered the game, and it includes some very revealing quotes by Sumner coach Keith Ross, including this:
"They didn't break any unwritten rules. Their starters played in the first half and a little in the third quarter. That’s normal."
Take a look at the story, and tell me if you feel the same way. And please -- I'm very serious about this -- keep the discussion clean and the rancor out of it.

Morning stars
1. Ellen Haas, Mercer Island, girls soccer. Haas score both of the Islanders' goals in a 2-0 win against Interlake.
2. Siera Keeler, Seattle Academy, girls soccer. Scored a goal and had three assists in a 6-0 win against Bellevue Christian. Seattle Academy improved to 9-0.
3. Cailin Fellows, Edmonds-Woodway, volleyball. Had 15 kills in a 3-0 win against Shorewood.
Also, Garfield volleyball is having a "Dig Pink" even tonight to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. Its match against Redmond at the new Garfield gym begins at 7 p.m.
