On Friday night, Mountlake Terrace's Chaz Dalton made one for kickers everywhere. And for the biggest upset of the young season.

Dalton made a 42-yard field goal last night, and he made it in the final seconds, and he made it to tie the game against Meadowdale. That set up Dalton's teammate, Casey Ellersick, to run in the sinning score in overtime, and Mountlake Terrace beat third-ranked Meadowdale 23-17. Terrace has won twice now this season -- also avenging last year's loss to Lynnwood -- after winning just once in 2007.

Because of changes in WesCo's alignment, this wasn't a nonleague game, and Meadowdale remains the WesCo 3A favorite. But it's still a rivalry game, one that showed Mountlake Terrace won't go quietly in WesCo 4A this season.

And how about West Seattle? This, too, was a nonleague game, but West Seattle had never beaten O'Dea. Shoot, no Metro team had toppled the Irish in 21 games. And we knew the Wildcats could fly and they could score, but they also showed last night they can play some D, too. A 21-6 win says a lot about West Seattle, and I've got a feeling these two teams will meet again -- in the Metro championship game.

Other teams feeling good today:

-Cleveland. The Eagles have already surpassed their win total from the last two seasons with a 2-1 start. They beat Chief Sealth 34-0 last night, the most points the Eagles have scored in three years.

-Lakeside. It's off to a 3-0 start after a 21-6 win against Vashon Island -- a game Vashon led 6-0 going into the fourth. I think we'll find out a lot more about Lakeside next Saturday, when it plays at Eastside Catholic.

-Issaquah. I was at the Eagles' 36-7 win last night, and they were every bit of a fifth-ranked team in their win against Inglemoor. Passing game, run game, defense -- all spectacular last night.

-Federal Way. The Eagles have their top runner back in the pads. Andre Barrington scored twice in a 38-18 win against Kentridge. The WSU recruit missed the first two games with a bruised knee.

1. Chad Dalton, Mountlake Terrace, football. Any time a high-school kid makes a 42-yarder to tie a game against the third-ranked team in 3A, he's going to be the top dog.

2. T.J. Lee, West Seattle, football. He scored all three West Seattle touchdowns, two on runs and one on a 100-yard kickoff return to start the second half.

3. Brian Sonneveldt, Monroe, football. Senior QB passed for 401 yards and five touchdowns in a 39-27 win against Sedro-Wooley.

4. Mariner defense. The Marauders had four sacks and six tackles for loss in a 14-0 shutout of Cascade.

5. Bo Dickinson, Lake Stevens, football. Scored his second return touchdown of the season with an 80-yard punt return.
