Midnight practice?
Posted by Tom Wyrwich
So the first day that fall teams can practice is tomorrow -- yes, it's really here -- and one school is getting a jump on the competition by going as early as possible. Evergreen High in White Center and new coach David Lewis are starting at 12:01 a.m. tonight (or tomorrow morning, if you'd like; I'm sticking with tonight). Here's the schedule for their Midnight Madness practice:
6:00 pm: Individual photos, height/weight/body fat measurements taken, paper work
7:30 pm: Fitness testing (weight lifting max, sprints) and a guest speaker
10:00 pm: Bar-B-Que
11:45 pm: Players prepare for practice
12:01 am: Practice begins
2:00 am: Practice ends
3:00 am: Lights out
7:30 am: Breakfast
9:00 am: Conditioning practice
This would be, for sure, the first such time I've heard of this in high school (colleges, especially in basketball, have midnight madness events all the time). That's a late night and an early morning. But Evergreen might get two practices in before most schools go for the first time tomorrow.

This is the most rediculous thing I have ever heard of. As if there is some type of advantage to messing with the player's sleeping cycles by having them practice till 2 in the morning, and depriving them of sleep by only giving them 4 hours and then contitioning the following morning. I knew Evergreen was in trouble when they lost Shaun Tarantola as a head coach, but I could have never predicted this outcome.

I remember Interlake doing this awhile back. I think they went 0-fer that year. Honestly, how productive is a practice in the middle of the night and another one after (maybe) 4 hours sleep? It will be interesting to see how Evergreen fares this year.

Sounds more like some fun and bonding time to me, rather than trying to get a big advantage. Having a good time together could benefit the team more than one extra practice. It also sounds like no one actually asked the coach what his motivation for this was - that might be a good place to start.

Wouldn't it be a violation if the players were being supervised by coaches while preparing for practice prior to August 20th? The hands off period didn't end until midnight.

Our HS swim team has had a midnight practice for years, probably going back to the early 90's. No big deal to us.
