Summer Slam thoughts
Posted by Tom Wyrwich
Is it March yet? Because at times Sunday at Franklin's Quaker Summer Slam, it felt like it. The intensity of some of the final games rivaled what you'll see in the Tacoma Dome next year.
And there were some exceptional games. Take, for instance, Rainier Beach's semifinal game against Garfield, where the defending 3A champs -- sans four starters from last year -- were taken to the last second by the Bulldogs, with freshman Tony Wroten scoring 39 points. From someone who saw a lot of Tony a year ago, he looked improved. At one point, he drilled three three-pointers in a row, but he couldn't hit the tying one at the end. (This game also featured a Rainier Beach player screaming "That's a Ginobili!" after what he thought was a flop. I love that Manu has worked his way into the high-school lexicon.) Franklin's semifinal against Bellevue which was neck and neck until junior guard Peyton Siva scored about 20 of his 44 points in the final five minutes. Peyton's looking as confident as ever.
The championship game was exasperating at times, and both teams were tired playing their second game in about four hours. But Franklin confirmed what I had thought coming in: the Quakers will be the 3A team to beat next year. The game also confirmed this: that Metro League game between these two teams next year will be a classic.
You can check out all the results here, and here's a couple I should point out:-Garfield 75, Bellarmine Prep 74. What a game this was, featuring what I would call three of the state's top 10 players. Bellarmine Prep's Abdul Gaddy and Avery Bradley each scored 32 points, and so did Wroten. But the game was won by Garfield's De'Andre Taylor, whose tip-in with a second left got the Bulldogs past a very tough second-round game.
-Bellevue 71, Federal Way 60. You might remember the Wolverines were among The Times' top 10 for most of the season last winter, until West Seattle upset them twice in the district tournament, and Bellevue didn't move onto state. Well, almost that entire team is back, with sharpshooter Aaron Bright and a big front line of Colton Christian, Alex Schrempf and Matt Olson. They won the Bellevue CC spring leage and after beating Federal Way -- last year's 4A runner up that added transfer Michael Hale from Decatur -- you have to like where the Wolverines stand for next year. That district will be as tough as ever again next year, though.
-Also, Foss and Curtis showed they should be taken seriously next year. And Lakes, which ran into Federal Way, appears to have a good team coming back, too.

The point guard for Curtis looked really good. His shot selection was excellent and his FG % was
pretty high.

I couldn't open the file completely, but I managed to see some of the bracket. All I saw was Gig Harbor from my side of the water. Where were the other West Sound teams - the Island (that's Bainbridge), CK, South, B-town?
