Class 4A championship game: Bothell-Lewis & Clark

Posted by Tom Wyrwich

END 3rd Q: We're still tied at 7, with the two teams getting very little going on offense in the third.

HALFTIME: Remains tied at 7, but LC is beginning to win the battles at the line of scrimmage, which is exactly what the Tigers need to do to contain quicker Bothell. This is very reminiscent of the Ferris game, where Bothell roared down the field on the first drive, then stalled.

4:28 left, 2nd Q: Lewis and Clark ties it with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Taylor Eglet to Alex Gauper.

END 1st Q: It remains 7-0 Bothell. LC has 1st and 10 at its own 46.

7:27 left, 1st Q: Bothell takes a 7-0 lead on a 1-yard Patrick Ottorbech run.

We're about half an hour away from the Bothell-Lewis & Clark game, and it appears many of the Bothell haves braved the snow up North to get here (it's been pretty clear today down South). Understandably -- with the snow coming down in Spokane and along the passes -- the LC crowd is sparse.

One quick note: Bothell's Trey Burwick, a fullback and middle linebacker, is in uniform. He suffered a fractured fibula four weeks ago against Gig Harbor. We'll see if he gets in the game or not.

Like yesterday, we won't have many updates here, with so much writing to do for the Sunday paper. But the game, like yesterday, is on FSN and locally, you can hear it on the radio on 850 AM. And this will help everyone out of town: You can hear an Internet Webcast of the game at KBCSports.com.

Here's a reminder of how the Times writers picked this game:

Craig Smith: Bothell, 21-14
Sandy Ringer: Bothell, 28-21
Tom Wyrwich: Bothell, 21-10
Zach Landres-Schnur: Bothell 14-10
Joshua Mayers: Lewis and Clark 17-16

Congrats to LC for beating the most arrogant team in the state - they've got as many coaches as players - who knows how many film crews - (some even have special sideline credentials) Bothell was run over by Shaw and towards the end they were full of cheap shots. Hekker is a pretty good QB as long as nobody is within 5 yards of him. Blue Train got derailed once again, KINGCO overrated as LC knocks off 3 of 4 top KINGCO teams on it's way to the championship.
Was actually enjoyable watching them balling on the field after the game.

Looks like all the nuts and poor sports come out when the good programs that have great school support spirit get beat. Now I know how ODea felt last night.
LC is a great team. The best team tonight. Their D intercepted and Shaw wore us down. They get all the credit and #1.
As one of only two teams left standing this year, the blue train will be back next year, not because some of it's fans shoot off their mouths, but because it only matters what happens on the gridiron.
Congratulations to EW and Ferris, also. They were each one play away from playing tonight.

Let's face it guys, we all knew this would happen. All show and no go from the biggest loudmouths in WA (Bothell Blue Babies). Congrats, L&C! That is a legit smashmouth football team. If the Bothell (and KingCo) posters would've kept their mouths shut and remained professional this season nobody would be saying anything to them right now. But since they didn't, we all love rubbing it in their faces (I REALLY do!). Anyway, what happened to this big KingCo conference I was forced to hear about all season...?

Posted by sdd

12:21 AM, Dec 02, 2007

like I said, nuts and poor sports. the game is played on the field, not by loser loudmouths who hide behind their posts "rubbing" from afar. BHS has been one of only three teams who have been on the field playing for the 4A championship the past two years.
Remember where the game is played.
See you next year on the field.

Hey all you LC fans, shows some respect, the only reason they won was because we were not playing very good football, So just know that next year we're going to the exact thing we did to oak harbor and show your noses in the dirt, where they belong the way you handled that win.that win ment jack squat. Treasure the game, show some respect, and shut your mouths.

Hey sdd, sour grapes buddy! You're definitely the type of person I was talking about. The game is played on the field, got it...You guys got beat and you're gonna hear about it because you couldn't keep your mouth shut all season. If this doesn't open your eyes to the fact that football is played all around the state and NOT just in the KingCo or at bothell, nothing will. See you next year on the field

Congrats to LC winning the game. I didnt get to watch any of it, but I enjoy hearing that LC played smashmouth. Bothell is a very good program with a excellent coaching staff thought it does seem large compared to KingCo schools. I agree though that Bothell's fans are among the most arrogant and cocky in the state (and I played against them. Skylines fans are as well, but were much classier to other teams and backed it up on the field). That all said, the past three years KingCo has played very well seed wise from top to bottom in the playoffs, with two teams reaching the title game in 05, one last year and one this year. Example: a Woodinville team with two or three losses went all the way to the title game in 05, won two games last year in the playoffs, and came back again this year moving past the first round as a 3 or 4 seed out of its conference. Skyline won yesterday and will probably be back in state next year at the 4A level. KingCo 4A is a very strong, tough division, and I feel it deserves respect. Congrats to LC, and good luck next year KingCo!

Congratulations to LC. They did what they had to do, which was add something to Shaw's game. Their quarterback was WAY better than advertised, better at throwing on the run than the Ferris quarterback, that's for sure. Shaw was good, but the quarterback throwing on the run is what put them over the top. Bothell held Shaw to less than 5 yards a carry and stopped him when they had to, but the QB was the game-breaker. He and his receivers made the plays.

As for all this hatred for Bothell, wow. Some of you really need a life. Why does it offend you that BHS has so many VOLUNTEERS (including most of the coaches and virtually all of the people who film games for them) eager to get behind a classy coach and a bunch of hard-working kids? I would think that would be something to look up to, not take shots at.

And Bob, if you're going to try for a real cheap shot, at least get your geography right. If you lived in a trailer park in Kenmore, you would go to Inglemoor, not Bothell.

Back to the game: You will hear no excuses from here. LC had an excellent plan and made the plays. They are worthy champions, and I am proud of my team's second-place finish.

Hey all you anti-Bothell bloggers...the reason all us Cougar fans are quiet on the blog is because we all drove back from Tacoma and many are in the school gym as we speak, congratulating their team. Those of you who are so quick to post must be sitting at home. And why could that be? Because your team isn't playing in the Championship game.

Bothell is a wonderful program with great players and classy coaches. Just because a bunch of middle-age men sit around, talk big, and hide behind their computer screens doesn't mean the team is cocky at all.

Great job LC! You played a heck of a game!

To all those Bothell fans and players saying they are the champions and 4A is much better than 3A. I don't know if you remember but when Skyline was in 4A in 04'-05'...we dominated. We went to state our first year and won it the next. And I don't know if you saw the score to the Skyline vs. Woodinville game...but I believe it was 41-7. So I guess with all the facts you could say that 3A has much better teams than 4A. And it will be proven next year when we win state again. And congradulations to L&A.

Being from the West Side and watching my team lose big to a very good Prosser team, I have to give the East side props. Many on this sight give Eastern football no credit, but all but the AAA championship saw Eastern victors. I think Skyline was the best team in the state, but I would have liked to watch a Skyline-Prosser game. Don't say Prosser couldn't hang because their AA. Two short years ago they were in the AAA championship and were perennial playoff powers at that classification. Congrats to all champions. On the Bothel subject--yes on the field they are a great team, but SOME of their fans on this sight each week have been truly classless which leads to many of the anti-Bothel rhetoric.

Hey prepfan:

nothing wrong with Bothell volunteers taping in accordance to WIAA rules, FROM THE STANDS or ENDZONE, and (hopefully) WITH STADIUM MANAGER PERMISSION.

We're so used to Bothell video guy at the endzone all season....he's like a fixture at the stadium, right next to the HoneyBucket portajohn. That's creepy, but nothing wrong.

It's when your Bothell football dads illegally sneak onto the field to tape potential opponents and their play calls and signals....That is what puts Bothell Baby Blues team at the bottom of my sportsmanship ranking. Not to mention the always well-behaved (NOT) fans at Pop Keeney....they do your school proud.

Bothell Coach "Tom Bainter barely held it together, accepting the second-place plaque but refusing to force his players to line up for the obligatory postgame photo."

Nice to see that lack of respect for the process really cames through in Coach Bainter's action there. Lack of respect, that is, when they are losing.

Notice how many "Unsportsmanlike Conduct" flags were thrown on Bothell last night? I counted at least 3. And I only watched about half the game.

As good as the kids are, they can only act based on what they see among their adult mentors. Bainter did a nice job there showing them what sportsmanship is all about, and one can only imagine that he did the same throughout the season.

"Win at all costs." Didn't one prominent Bothell Fan Jerk mention that a few weeks ago when the whole spy incident was coming to light? So true.

If you refer to all Bothell fans as jerks (and lets face it all schools have them and most of the time they are the ones that shoot their mouths off the most). BUT it makes me wonder what does that make you all that get on this blog and trash talk?? A real fan? pilar of the community? sportmans of the year? I'm sure your community and school are really proud.
My guess is that you come from a school that Bothell beat this year and you can't handle it. For 13 weeks they were the best team on the field on the night they played. Week 14 Lewis and Clark was. Congratulations to both teams for their remarkable seasons. Both of them earned their way to the Championship game and it was an entertaining game to watch.

Congratulations to Lewis and Clark..they made the final big play. They deserve to be champions. Whether a team decides to take a post-game picture has nothing to do with sportsmanship, "respect for the process?" or class of a program - that's ridiculous.

Bothell will be back in the playoffs again next year.

Jusy like a bothell fan - I've never seen a fan base with so many excuses: When they lose it's because they were the better team but had a bad game, and when they show disrespect to the "process" it's no big deal and not unsportsmanlike. One of the most important things sports can teach a young person is learning how to lose with grace and sportsmanship. Being a good winner is easy but it's how you face diverstiy that shows what you are really made of. I'm sick of bothell, their arrogant fans and all the excuses they come up with for losing, not staying for the awards ceremony and not owning up to the fact that they actually did have an illegal film crew (person) on the sidelines of some of the play-off games.
They need to look at themselves in the mirror and face reality and accept it and it consequences, might learn something

Frankly, this is really sad and I hope that everyone who posted is at least under 16 because pretty much everyone posted has said something really immature. Look, Bothell and Lewis and Clark played a great game. It was intense and I loved it cause it was the last time my brother got to play as a senior. It was unfortunate that Bothell lost (Bothell Alumn) but before I say congratulations to Lewis and Clark for a great game they played, I would like to mention that everyone from the Bothell team did see your number five, act like a complete jerk towards the last few moments of the game. I'm sorry if you feel underrated, but that type of sportsmanship is something you all should be ashamed of before you run your mouths about Bothell's 'arrogance'. And oh wait, this is what, HIGH SCHOOL football?

I am deeply disturbed by the attitude by most of the people posting in this thread. This is high school football people. I am a Bothell fan and what I see is about 5 really outspoken and immature Bothell posters (every school has their 5) and 5-10 people that have deep emotional problems (see comments from poster Bill Jones on any thread over the past four weeks).

This is the Seattle Times, not the Spokesman Review. On the West side, very few of us have a clue about Eastside football. Today we do, especially for 2007. LC was led by Shaw but the attitude of the team was the makeup of a champion and that is why they held the trophy above their heads.

The Bothell football family is a collection of truly fantastic people. Coaches that develop a group of boys into respectful, driven and purposeful young men. They are building an environment in Bothell, where winning is the by product of family, dedication and character, not the mandate.

Bothell Cougars, don't listen to these 30-40 year old bitter ex-football players. You have won 25 football games over the past two seasons and you have done it with class, as role models in your school and leaders in your community.

There will be a series of posts following this note that will try to tell you differently. Remember, the fans from LC, Ferris, EW, Oak Harbor, Eastlake, etc are good people and just like you. Also remember the few distraught individuals that blame everyone else for their personal failures need your prayers. What you have built is founded on greatness. Congratulations for the players coaches and fans of the Blue Train. The ride you took us on was a blast. Blessings in all you face in the future!!!

Okay Bill, now you're kinda pissing me off. You're not painting a good picture of yourself and you're failing to recognize good sportsmanship. Read what I previously posted about what your players have done, and stop bringing up the crying like babies crap. Some of them were seniors and this was their last game of high school football ever. And it was even more disappointing because they came this far last year to end up with the same results and no matter what team you are, or where you come from: coming this far in the championship and only placing second for the second year in a row is crushing. Bothell's had their humbling defeat. Now show some honor in your victory.

As I read the comments of the Bothell coach on Sunday morning, I wonder about his "lesson" of not having the players gather for the team picture. Sure you lost a tough game...but this is more than a game. Life in not fair and we all have our downfalls. He should have been a "teacher" and had the kids gather for the team picture. This is a once-in-a lifetime moment. Sure , last year was tough and this year was bittersweet. But the coach needs to set an example about leadership, pride and sportsmanship.

Also, how many coaches do the have???!!! How many do they need???!!! It seemed a bit excessive. Do that many "coaches" go into the classrooms and help the rest of the students with tutoring...mentoring?? Why does football need soooooooooooooo much attention???

Eric P. recognize that Bill Jones has been anti-Bothell poster for four weeks. He was an Oak Harbor fan, then a Ferris fan, then an LC fan. Go back and look at the threads. He has deep issues as he sits in a dark room and drops bombs via a blog that has no accountability. Just skip over his posts and don't read him.

To: I wonder. If you had played football (and you haven't based on your lack of understanding), the emotion of losing as a team is much more powerful than losing an individual sport. It is not just letting yourself down, it is family as a whole. I will not hold a High School coach or his 17-18 year old boys accountable for not taking a picture after a devastating loss. WHO CARES!

By the way, they have a lot of volunteers at Bothell because Bainter is someone you want to be around. Gracious and respectful. He holds boy on the team accountable for their actions on and off the field. For their role as leaders in their school and community. Their are people helping with the program just because they want to be part of it. I think that is a good thing...

Thanks DDD.

BHS is not all football. Students, staff, and the community appreciate all of what this high school is (though they also appear to love going to football games). They value their students' participation in all activities and the development of well-rounded young people. They are proud of their new performing arts center. School climate has been on an upswing for 10 years. Walk down Main St. in this small town and you'll see "Cougar Pride" posters year round.

I see the same pride when I walk onto the EW, Eastlake, or Skyline campuses. I'm sure there are many other high schools that have the same school and civic pride. I'd be proud to walk the LC campus today based on the class act shown by their players, coaches and fans this year. I hope their school has as much to offer their kids as does BHS.

People who judge a whole community based on a few moron posts need to get a life themselves or maybe get to know some real people.

From Sandy's final post, "I'm not sure I've ever seen a more distraught group of players than Bothell's kids Saturday night."

Why do you suppose these kids were more distraught than other kids you have seen? Could it be that somehow they were given the idea that they were more entitled to the state championship? Could it be the behavior of their parents/fans when they booed the LC team entering the Dome from the locker room made Bothell kids feel their opponents were unworthy of respect? Could it be the incredible buildup given by the press made the Cougars feel invincible? Could it be chanting "WE CAN'T HEAR YOU!" when a handful of LC fans were cheering their lungs out for their team while 6 booster buses were stranded on the pass made the Bothell team feel they were the only ones worth cheering for? Could it be the coach telling the players they deserved to win because they had been there before and come so close? Thank goodness we still get to play the games! I don't know how disappointed the LC players would have been if roles were reversed, but I hope the feelings would have been based on THEIR dreams, THEIR emotions, and THEIR efforts. Coach Yearout, Hughes, Reyburn, and Travis and the other coaches believed in this team, allowing them to believe in themselves. Even a Ferris coach believed LC would win it all! I'm with you, Sandy. I'm ready for basketball, too. Since I'm the parent of a LC STATE CHAMPION football player, as well as an LC STATE CHAMPION basketball player, changing sports seasons is a joy! See you back in the Dome in March! Congratulations, Tigers and good luck with your winter sports.

Thanks DDD. Sorry I kind of exploded there...It's hard to read this when your younger brother plays for the Bothell Cougars and your family pretty much dedicates their lives for this program.

To 2XChamp: After reading some of the posts presented from Lewis and Clark, I apologize that the Seattle Times underrated Lewis and Clark as well as apparently the Bothell Football Program. I had no idea that this was the general consensus from LC. That being said, I don't think you can blame the support the Bothell team received from their HIGH SCHOOL fans as well as enthusiastic parents on the football team itself. The whole distance thing was a problem, but if locations were reversed, I'm sure your school would have shown just as much support as the Bothell community did. I would like to remind you also, that while it may be that you were underrated, it does not excuse or overlook the fact that you had a few rude fans in your audience as well and every team suffers the same bad sportsmanship. I would also like to mention that one of your players behaved very inappropriately towards the end of the game, running up and down the Bothell line, taunting them with only several seconds left in the game. My brother is one of the Senior Captains and he respected Lewis and Clark for the challenging team they were, no matter what the media said. Bothell was distraught because for the Seniors, this was their last game of High School football ever. The Bothell team is family, and I know for a fact that all the undergraduates wanted this for their brothers, the Seniors. So don't talk about dreams, emotions or efforts because to that effect, you know nothing.

I think the Bothell fans in general are more dedicated than most. I suspect that more of them would have ventured over the pass than the few LC folks like me. Btw, it was tough travel conditions. Bothell fans should be proud since they have developed a strong program that seems to reload rather than rebuild.

Hey 2XChamp, have you ever noticed that just about EVERY SINGLE TEAM'S FANS boos their opponents, especially in a game like that. Notice that LC booed Bothell when they came out of the lockers as well. And that was way before LC came out. I think everyone who has said any crap about either team needs to just shut up. DDD summed it up well. THIS IS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!!! WIN OR LOSE, IT JUST A GAME, EVERYONE NEEDS TO JUST GET OVER IT AND GET ON WITH THEIR LIVES!!! LC did a good job, played very well and deserved to win just as much as Bothell did. I, for one, respect LC for their determination to get to the state finals. You know, I am a BHS alumni and I can tell you BHS is one of the most highly respected schools in Washington State. They are so much more then just football, as I'm sure LC is much more then just football. I don't care if your a Bothell fan or and LC fan, every one should respect their opposing team. Let's just all move on with our lives.

NH,

You say LC did a good job, played very well and deserved to win just as much Bothell did. Bothell Didn't Deserve it beacuase they Didn't earn it, quit takeing that away from LC. Not everyone can be a winner, you need to get over that and realize that LC had bigger heart.

LC is way more than football, One of the top acedemic public schools in the state. With a great tradition.

In the end Bothell and LC played a great game and good luck to both teams next year.

Defense Wins Championships,

I understand what you are saying. I'm not trying to take away for LC's win. They did a fantastic job, however Bothell DID deserve to win. I personally know Coach Bainter and most of the kids on the team and they have worked they're butts off to get this far. In my book, Bothell is a winner. They have been #1 in state for two seasons straight and, with the exception of the last two state games, Bothell has been undefeated both sessions. Bothell plays every game as if it's first game of the session. I can tell you that Bothell has earned their trips to the state finals. Kingco is a tough division, just ask anyone. Bothell has earned to go to state by beating all the other teams, just like LC has. Both teams going into this game had big hearts, LC's was just a little bigger. I congratulate LC for they're victory and wish them the best of luck next year.

LC did not win 13 games this year. LC did not have 5 shut outs. LC did not have a 25% ratio of points for vs. Points allowed. Neither did Eastlake, EW, or any other 4A team. These are all good teams. 4A is a tough league level. One game does not a season make. It only gives you the shiny gold football and bragging rights.

Congratulations LC on this game. It was the right one to win...

I actually think Ferris was much tougher than your team and a fluke drop in the snow saved Bothell from an overtime and unknown outcome. For me that was the real state championship with an undefeated team. I hope Ferris takes state in Basketball again. They were far classier than LC.

How involved are you all in your community? The Bothell players do special events for charities, and are involved citizens help with senior citizen events, blood drives, support the police and fire department, they are heroes on and off the field. Win or lose. They have a great program there.

wow! this is the first time i have ready through the entire blog, that is some intese stuff!! i had no idea that this game ment so much to people who had very little to do w/ its outcome, (of course i am not refering to coaches or other players) it really is a shame that people are offended by what a parent or another fan or player says on a blog, it is only a game, i agree with that, but games are fun to play when you come out on top so that argument is invalid, and the sportsmanship, i am not here to argue for or against it because i talked during the game and i was talked to during the game, so that is a point that is not worth talking about, i recently had a dream about losing the championship game, and i know that i got to wake up and still be a champion but i can see now that losing a game like that is something that no one would want to do, it is still kinda surreal for me, my sister was a basketball state champion when i was a freshman and when i saw her with that trophy, i always pictured that as nothing more than a dream for me, but this year was something special for me and my team mates and our coaches, we never doubted ourselves, thanks LC tigers, it was one hell of a ride!
