Preseason boys basketball rankings
Posted by Tom Wyrwich
These are going to run in the paper tomorrow, but I figured I'd give a first look at our preseason rankings for boys basketball.
Two things struck me as I spoke with coaches around the area:
1) The SPSL 4A is going to be awfully good. Kentridge, Decatur, Kentwood, Bethel and Curtis are going to make getting through the regular season a challenge for any team.
2) Good luck to all the teams in the 3A Sea-King District. KingCo 3A and the Metro League are going to be beasts this season. Just look at the top 10: six of the teams are from that district. Only four will go to the state tournament. You do the math.
I'm sure you'll all have quite a few thoughts on these, so here they are(2006 rankings in parentheses):
Class 4A
1. Ferris (29-0)
2. Franklin (24-3)
3. Kentridge (25-4)
4. Prairie (Bush Praire) (14-13)
5. Decatur (24-4)
6. Inglemoor (13-10)
7. Kentwood (16-13)
8. Bellarmine Prep (Tacoma) (12-11)
9. Gig Harbor (12-11)
10. Pasco (20-9)
Class 3A
1. Rainier Beach (20-9)
2. Lakes (22-4)
3. Seattle Prep (17-11)
4. Bellevue (22-7)
5. Auburn (16-11)
6. Mercer Island (16-8)
7. Enumclaw (17-5)
8. O'Dea (25-5)
9. Bainbridge (25-4)
10. Franklin Pierce (11-18)
Do you have a different take? Feel free to give us your top 10s in the comments.

How could you not give Mt. Rainier (des moines) any love?? Returning 3 out of five starters from a team that knocked off Seattle Prep (defending state champs) in the first round of the state tourny last year. Trust me dont sleep on them. Alfie Miller and John Morine. Remember those names, maby the best inside outside punch in the state...

Beach wont win state...they have a dream team, and dream teams rarely achieve the dream... I will bet money that odea will be there in the end, in the top 4, LUMPKIN IS THE BEST COACH IN STATE HISTORY.

Not a single Wesco team is ranked? The big guy is also was voted ineligable for Ferris. I think Franklin will get the top notch.
Lumpkin is hall of fame, but Ed Pepple of Mercer Island is the greatest hs coach this state ever saw in any sport.

The 3A top 10 already has an upset: North Kitsap beat No. 9 Bainbridge 58-54.

dont sleep on ingraham they went 0 and 25 last year and this year they got a new coach and only one returning player

mariner should be at least top 6.. made it to state last year and have 4 of 5 returning starters.

O'Dea should be higher up, but I wouldn't put my money on the championship just yet. They lost a lot of talent, but still have a solid team so I think top 4 is a good prediction. Seattle Prep and Ranier Beach will not be good this year. Bainbridge lost Stephen Gray and he was 100% of their team. I don't know enough about the other teams to make predictions about them.
North Kitsap is 4A

How is beach not going to be good. They have at least 5 d1 players. I understand someone saying they might not win but saying they will not be good is an huge overstatement

Bainbridge is terrible no way they are even a top 25 team in 3A

I'm suprised you don't have Kennedy ranked in your 3A Boy's Top 10. The only thing that stopped them from getting to state was there big kid getting hurt. As for Rainer Beach having 5 Division 1 players-Most people call it recruiting. That is except the WIAA, they just overlook the fact every year. Funny how they kick Archbishop Murphy out of the Football playoffs for a kid not having a physical, yet every year they let Rainer Beach slide by with new kids from other schools. Let's all tell it how it is for once.

Mark McLaughlin for Inglemoor High School. Going to the NBA. Going to average 30 this year. IHS will be KingCo4a Champs.

Ferris's player can petition. School District 81 ruled him ineligible because he didn't have any parent/guardian (his mom) living with him.
They made it clear he can appeal.
He's also old enough to be emancipated.

I would like to know why Renton isn't mentioned as one of the top ten teams. For the past five years this team has made it to state...this past summer and fall Renton beat many of the teams that are mentioned in the top ten....So, whatever the criteria is for determining this top ten list must be re-examined!!!

Doug Strauss who was an excellent coach for Kennedy, lost his daughter from cancer. He quit the coaching job to spend more time with his family. Jason Prouty who replaces Doug is probably the smartest coach in 3A. He is assisted by Jason Picinch, my son. Jason told me other 3A teams will be in for a big surprise. He also says Kennedy has the most talent he has seen in years. Kennedy will be in the top 4 by the end of the season.

Bainbridge can't make any excuses about loosing to North Kitsap. North should be in 3A but they are playing up a class. The school spit over the summer into NK and Kingston. Kingston is also playing up a class in 3A.

Lakes High Should have been Number 1 not 2. With four D-I and few D-II players, and the best player in the State at any Classification (Kavario Middleton). Lakes is looking to go UNDEFEATED.

As for the big guy, he has right of appeal and based on certain criteria in WIAA eligibility rules stand a serious chance of getting the go-ahead. Stand-by.

Roosevelt should be in the top ten, not Inglemoor. Roosevelt was clearly the second best team in Kingco last season and return arguably one of the better backcourts in the state, with Glenn Dean, David Aberg and Amin Tufa.

Bellevue I think will by the end of the year be the best team in state. They may have a few slip ups in the beginning of the year just b/c they will still be gelling.
But with this line-up...the next 2 years are going to be very scary.
PG-Cam Warren Jr. Started since freshman year. D1-2 Talent
PG/SG-Aaron Bright soph. Issaquah Stud last year. D1 Talent
SF-Phil Bach senior. 6'3 being recruited by San Diego and Gozaga. D1 Talent
PF-Alex Schrempf Jr. 6'4 Detlef's son...need i say more? D1 Talent
c-Colton Christian Jr. 6'6 O'dea tranfer.D1 talent
6th Man. Matt Olsen Jr. 6'6. Big man who can drain the 3. Kid is still growing.

Where is FW? No superstars, but very deep. SPSL 4A is tough (Decatur is for real!), but they will be in the running also. They played Renton and Beach tough last weekend without starting center. I predict top 5 finish at state.

Why isn't roosevelt in the top 10? They beat Franklin tiwce in the summer without Glen Dean and beat Decatur 25-13 in a 10 minute exhibition game at the Chief Sealth Jamboree. They have an all senior starting lineup with underclass talent coming off the bench such as Kai Hoyt (Sophomore) and Gus Holbein (Junior)

Bellevue and Lakes might be "good" for once this year but the 3A Title runs through the METRO League just like it does every year. Come playoff time experience matters. Just look at the title game last year, experienced O'Dea vs inexperienced Bainbridge (who will be terrible this year without Gray). O'Dea, Beach, and Prep are the teams to beat regardless of what these rankings say. In the last 10 years there have only been 2 teams to win State outside the Metro League (Mercer Island '99, Mount Vernon '01).

Skyline should be ranked high in the top 10. They are gonna smash all. Its gonna be just like florida last year where the football team and the basketball team take home the championship.

Not so fast, Skyline Basketball? What makes you think Skyline will be a contender let alone win state in hoops? It's not happening, they have a good football program though but don't jump the gun. The Irish will be ready to play Saturday and will give them all they can handle and more.

Mariner made it to state but that was it. They got whooped every time the refs weren't being paid. Did you see their final district tournament game? A team that they had beaten twice whipped them by 20.

Garfield would have been ranked top 5, but without Aaron Dotson they will have to prove themselves first. I could see Garfield making some noise in KingCo 4A. Why? Tony Wroten, Class of '11. This kid is ranked as the top freshman shooting guard in the country and is one of only 3 freshman to earn an 87 rating from ESPN Recruiting (which is the highest grade given to a Class of '11 player so far). Watch out KingCo!

why is everyone ranking frankline so high. there is only that one player on the team and everyone knows who it is. without big man in the middle ferris might not be as good but kentridge had a squad this year and they should be at least number 2. remember franklin did get blown out by ferris last year.

I heard that Wroten kid is the real deal. Garfield will make some noise and probably go to state. They also have a strong forward in Nathan Rogers. Now those eastside schools who laugh at them in football will be the ones getting laughed at.

O'Dea should be in the top 4, you cant rope a team that has won back to back with such a low ranking. They have to lose it not earn it.
Besides they have a very talented Soph in Ballard that i would rival against Wroten any day. Look for the Irish to prevail once again, wait they did that last year so just plain again.

That ballard kid was at garfield and wroten dominated him, he doesnt compare to wroten whatsoever. Odea will be good, and should be in the top four, every year they define a great "team". Bothell? Garfield,Franklin, and Roosevelt will beat them by at least 30

Yes Bellevue did get 2 new transfers but you cant say anything about basketball tranfers when there is ranier beach. Bellevue is going to be very dangerous this year. Heck they did finish 3rd last year.
And as for bellevue football...every starter on their team this year has attended bellevue since they were a freshman...get your facts straight. which means NO TRANFERS.

Acutally Bellvue finished 3rd in the final rankings and they beat Rainer Beach for 4th in the state tourney. You really think that below .500 team from Eastern WA was better than Bellevue. I would think any team without one of the best 3 players in state would have a hard time succeeding... boy what a statement

Gaurantee O'Dea will be in top 4 in the end if not back to back champs, they dont have the talent but they have the teamwork and the BEST COACH IN STATE HISTORY! plus beach is a dream team, and dream teams rarely reach the dream...just some food for thought...look at seattle prep of 4 years ago...martell and hawes...and no state appearance...
