11 teams wrap up undefeated regular seasons

Posted by Tom Wyrwich

Congratulations to the following area football teams, who finished this week undefeated. In notable games this weekend, O'Dea wrapped up the Metro title against Nathan Hale, Ferndale survived Mount Vernon in overtime, and Archbishop Murphy won the Cascade with a victory against South Whidbey.

Looking ahead in the playoffs, some of these teams could meet pretty early. Skyline and Lakes would meet in the so-called "first round," which is actually the playoffs' second round. Ferndale and Franklin would meet in the quarterfinals, if both teams made it that far. The same's true with Bothell and Oak Harbor in Class 4A. There are plenty of teams ready to derail these meetings if they can.

One note: Cascade Christian hasn't finished its season yet. It plays Life Christian on Thursday.

Class 4A

No. 2 Bothell
No. 3 Edmonds-Woodway
No. 4 Oak Harbor

Class 3A

No. 1 Lakes
No. 2 Skyline
No. 4 O'Dea
No. 5 Ferndale
No. 6 Franklin Pierce

Class 2A

No. 3 Archbishop Murphy

Class 1A

No. 2 Meridian
*No. 6 Cascade Christian (hasn't finished season yet)

Class 2B

No. 3 Darrington

Morning stars

1. Melissa Vonder Hofen, Archibishop Murphy, girls soccer. Scored four goals against South Whidbey.

2. Miles Unterreiner, Gig Harbor, boys cross country. Posted the best winning time of the day, 15:14, to win Westside Classic at American Lake Golf Course.

3. Ashleigh Pollard, Rogers, volleyball. Racked up 20 kills and 27 digs, but that Kentwood team is just too good. The Conquerors won in four games.

1. Bothell
2. Edmonds/Woodway
3. Ferris
4. Oak Harbor

Bothell's D is scary when you see them in person. Fastest high school defense I have ever seen but they are small.

ED/Woodway is the best ground game in 4A (Snohomish a close second) and can complement with an effective air campaign. They can be game planned against by strong coaching staffs (see 2006 semi's vs. Bothell). I think Mr. Heard will run over Ferris (but wouldn't lay money on it). I am confident that if they meet Bothell in the Dome, that it won't be close. I think Ferris vs. Bothell is a much worse match up for the Blue Train.

Ferris is a classic team that was young last year and grew up together and it is bearing fruit. Eastside is not as strong as previous years so they could be much better or much worse than known.

Oak Harbor was higher four weeks ago when I saw them absolutely dominate Snohomish @ Snohomish but some cracks in the armor have been exposed in the past couple weeks. Bothell vs. the Islanders is the best game in the brackets meeting in the quarterfinals (if they both make it)

Two WATCHOUT teams in the 4A's
1. Eastlake - talent is better than big game performance has shown
2. Wenatchee - big boys and WAY under the radar

Unless they have improved a ton, Wenatchee is not that great. I saw there opener against Arlington and they were fortunate to get away with a win. They had a pick return for a touchdown while Arlington was closing in on the tying score in the 4th quarter. Arlington is not a bad team for 3A but they got dominated by all of the wesco 4A playoff teams. That was pretty early on though and sometimes teams improve alot during the year.

Thought it was worth mentioning, the Newport High Knights are not playing Columbia Basin, (as there is no Columbia Basin High - there is of course a C.B. League), they are playing Columbia River High at the Kiggin's Bowl in Vancouver on either the 1st or the 2nd of November.

Does anyone know where to find the schedule for this weeks playoffs? WIAA hasn't updated their brackets and I have a partial completed one supplied by the Seattle Times, but it hasn't been updated either...and none of these show the dates/times of the games. Any help would be appreciated.
